Spatiotemporal variations in aerosol optical depth and associated risks for populations in the arid region of Central Asia

Xiaofei Ma et al.

Summary: With the progress of urbanization, the increase in aerosol optical depth (AOD) in the arid Central Asia (ACA) has caused atmospheric pollution and physical health issues. This study evaluated the population exposure risk to AOD in six ecological zones based on remote sensing data and a population exposure risk model. The results showed that AOD in ACA has been increasing, especially in the Hexi corridor desert area and areas near the Aral Sea. The highest AOD was observed in spring and autumn, while the lowest was in winter. Land use changes, such as the reduction of water bodies and expansion of construction lands, contributed significantly to the increase in AOD.

Spatiotemporal variation and provincial scale differences of the AOD across China during 2000-2021

Gerrit de Leeuw et al.

Summary: The spatiotemporal variation of aerosol optical depth (AOD) in China was examined using MODIS data. The study found that AOD increased earlier in southern China compared to the northern provinces. AOD was high between 2006 and 2014, with significant fluctuations due to emission reduction policies and economic developments. However, from 2013/2014 onwards, AOD decreased significantly in response to the Clean Air Action Plan. Despite this, AOD remained stable from 2017 to 2020, fluctuating around the average value for those years and in some areas even lower than the AOD in 2000.

A dark target Kalman filter algorithm for aerosol property retrievals in urban environment using multispectral images

Gemine Vivone et al.

Summary: Natural and anthropogenic aerosol emissions have a significant impact on solar radiation, air quality, cloud lifetime, and precipitation patterns. Therefore, accurately assessing aerosol variability is crucial for forecasting future scenarios and implementing mitigation strategies. This paper presents a novel aerosol optical depth retrieval algorithm for urban environments, which leverages multi-wavelength data and Kalman filters to improve estimation accuracy. The proposed method demonstrates strong agreement with ground-based measurements and outperforms the baseline approach.

Aerosols optical and radiative properties in Indonesia based on AERONET version 3

Sheila Dewi Ayu Kusumaningtyas et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the seasonal variations of aerosol optical and radiative properties in different regions of Indonesia. The results show a distinct seasonal pattern in all sites except Bandung, where aerosol optical depth (AOD) increased during the dry season due to forest and peat fire outbreaks. The biomass burning sites exhibited wider ranges of observed Angstrom Exponent (AE) and high Fine Mode Fraction (FMF) during the dry burning period. Bandung had more aerosol distribution in a specific range of FMF and AE values, suggesting complex aerosol emissions from different sources and the formation of secondary aerosols. The biomass burning aerosols in Indonesia tend to cool the atmosphere with strong scattering rather than absorbing.

Evaluation of LaSRC aerosol optical depth from Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao greater bay area, China

Yangyang Jin et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the AODs retrieved by the LaSRC algorithm and proposed a three-step strategy for calculating the average of satellite retrieved AODs. The study also highlighted the need for further development of the LaSRC algorithm in coastal and water areas. The performance of Sentinel-2 AOD retrievals was found to be better than Landsat-8 AOD retrievals.

Strong control of effective radiative forcing by the spatial pattern of absorbing aerosol

Andrew I. L. Williams et al.

Summary: It is expected that the spatial pattern of anthropogenic aerosol will change significantly in the coming decades, which will have important implications for global climate. Model experiments show that the effective radiative forcing from absorbing aerosol varies greatly depending on their location due to rapid adjustments of clouds and circulation. Furthermore, changes in the spatial pattern of aerosol could alter climate through their impacts on radiative forcing.

MODIS high-resolution MAIAC aerosol product: Global validation and analysis

Wenmin Qin et al.

Summary: This study verifies the accuracy of the MAIAC aerosol optical depth (AOD) product globally and finds its high detection accuracy in tropical climate zones. Additionally, the accuracy of MAIAC AOD retrievals varies in different land-cover types, with high correlation in forests and lower correlation in barren areas. The uncertainties of MAIAC AOD retrievals are influenced by aerosol conditions and increase with higher aerosol loading and Angstrom exponent values.

Theoretical Uncertainty Analysis of Satellite Retrieved Aerosol Optical Depth Associated with Surface Albedo and Aerosol Optical Properties

Jingting Huang et al.

Summary: This study uses a simplified radiative transfer model and traditional error propagation methods to estimate biases in the satellite aerosol retrieval algorithm from the perspective of surface albedo and aerosol optical properties. The research shows that a 5% bias in surface albedo, single scattering albedo, or asymmetry parameter can lead to significant errors in retrieved AOD, especially when these parameters are close to their critical values.

Summary: This study developed an AOD retrieval algorithm for the GF-4 satellite, showing good robustness in both bright urban areas and dark rural areas. The accuracy of GF-4 AOD was slightly higher in rural areas compared to urban areas, and higher than the MOD04 3 km and 10 km dark target AOD.

Analysis of Aerosol Optical Depth from Sun Photometer at Shouxian, China

Lina Xun et al.

Summary: In this study, two cloud screening methods were used to process sun photometer measurements in Shouxian from March 2020 to April 2021. The results show that there is a clear diurnal variation in AOD, with an overall average of 0.48 and significant seasonal differences. The single scattering albedo in Shouxian is higher compared to other regions, indicating strong scattering and weak aerosol absorption.
