Earth Map: A Novel Tool for Fast Performance of Advanced Land Monitoring and Climate Assessment

Carmen Morales et al.

Summary: Earth Map is a free application developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. It provides access to a vast amount of satellite imagery and geospatial datasets for land and climate data processing and analysis. The tool is user-friendly and does not require coding skills, making it suitable for various users and helping in the development of science-based policies and decision-making.

Spatially Balanced Sampling for Validation of GlobeLand30 Using Landscape Pattern-Based Inclusion Probability

Huan Xie et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an improved spatially balanced sampling method based on landscape pattern for validating the accuracy of the global land-cover dataset, GlobeLand30, in China. Through sample selection and validation in three different regions, the results show that this method can enhance the representativeness of samples and provide better guidance for biodiversity and sustainable development of the environment.

Consistency Analysis and Accuracy Assessment of Three Global Ten-Meter Land Cover Products in Rocky Desertification Region-A Case Study of Southwest China

Jun Wang et al.

Summary: Rocky desertification is a critical ecological and environmental problem globally. Evaluating land cover products and understanding their differences is important for researchers and users. This study assessed the accuracy and consistency of three land cover products in a rock deserted region of China, finding variations and providing guidance for users in similar areas.

Global 10 m Land Use Land Cover Datasets: A Comparison of Dynamic World, World Cover and Esri Land Cover

Zander S. Venter et al.

Summary: This study compares and evaluates global land use and land cover maps from Google, ESA, and Esri, finding a strong spatial correspondence among water, built area, trees, and crops. However, there are biases in estimating certain categories. Based on global and European ground truth data, Esri has the highest accuracy, especially in capturing details, while WC has the highest accuracy in European data. The study also emphasizes the importance of evaluating the suitability of these maps based on their application purpose and considering trade-offs between thematic resolution and accuracy.

Comparison of Three Ten Meter Land Cover Products in a Drought Region: A Case Study in Northwestern China

Junmei Kang et al.

Summary: The ecological and natural conditions in drought regions are harsh, with prominent features of water shortages and land desertification. In this study, the accuracy and spatial pattern distribution differences of three high-resolution land cover products (FROM-GLC, ESA, and ESRI) in drought regions were compared and analyzed. The results showed that the FROM-GLC product had the highest overall accuracy, while the ESRI product had the lowest overall accuracy. The spatial consistencies of the three products were low, and the mapping accuracy for grassland, bare land, shrubland, and other vegetation types needs improvement. The FROM-GLC, ESA, and ESRI products can be used as auxiliary data in research related to water and cropland resources in drought regions.

Validation of the US Geological Survey's Land Change Monitoring, Assessment and Projection (LCMAP) Collection 1.0 annual land cover products 1985-2017

Stephen V. Stehman et al.

Summary: The US Geological Survey has released annual land cover and land cover change products for the CONUS, with an overall accuracy of 82.5% as assessed by a reference sample dataset. Accuracy varies by land cover class, with lower accuracy in the eastern US, and specific user and producer accuracies were reported for different land cover types. Change accuracy improved when allowing for a +/- 2-year window for agreement, and footprint accuracy for areas experiencing land cover change was reported.
