Preliminary Application of Long-Range Lightning Location Network with Equivalent Propagation Velocity in China

Jie Li et al.

Summary: The equivalent propagation method with variable speed was used in a long-range lightning location network in China. By comparing with the ADTD lightning locating system, the feasibility of this method was initially verified. The long-range lightning location network showed improved detection efficiency, location accuracy, and detection range.

A new approach to map lightning channels based on low-frequency interferometry

Yanan Zhu et al.

Summary: The purely interferometric imaging algorithm developed for mapping lightning in the low-frequency band improves the accuracy and completeness of lightning maps by locating sources based on three-dimensional correlations. This algorithm can locate multiple concurrent lightning sources and provides more detailed maps compared to traditional techniques.

Characterization of Lightning Electric Field Waveforms Using a Large Database: 1. Methodology

Adonis F. R. Leal et al.

Summary: A new approach was presented to characterize CG lightning electric field waveforms using a large database, categorizing waveforms based on stroke order, time of day, and distance range. Representative waveforms were found by averaging individual amplitude-normalized waveforms, and the methodology of waveform classification and averaging was discussed. The developed methodology was applied to analyzing variation of lightning electric field waveforms with distance in a specific range in a companion paper.

A method for determining D region ionosphere reflection height from lightning skywaves

Xiao Zhou et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new method for detecting the ionosphere using sky waves generated by lightning, with height uncertainty better than 1.5 km. Different from previous studies, this method can select lightning within 2000 km for calculation and correct errors caused by ground wave delay. The results show that the height during the day is strongly correlated with the solar zenith angle in the absence of solar flare X-rays.
