Ground-Based Thermal Imaging for Assessing Crop Water Status in Grapevines over a Growing Season

Zheng Zhou et al.

Summary: This study proposes a robust strategy to assess crop water status in grapevines by using thermal and RGB images to calculate crop water stress index (CWSI) and correlating it with leaf water potential (psi(leaf)). The results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can be used for real-time assessment of crop water status in commercial vineyards and decision support systems for grapevine irrigation management.

Spatiotemporal normalized ratio methodology to evaluate the impact of field-scale variable rate application

L. Katz et al.

Summary: The wide adoption of precision agriculture among farmers relies on demonstrating its efficiency at the field scale. This study proposes a spatiotemporal normalized ratio methodology to evaluate the impact of variable-rate versus uniform application in on-farm trials. The results show that variable-rate drip irrigation can reduce in-field water variability but does not necessarily improve yield.

Assessing the impact of measurement errors in the calculation of CWSI for characterizing the water status of several crop species

V Gonzalez-Dugo et al.

Summary: Canopy temperature is an important indicator of crop water status and is proposed for monitoring irrigation needs. The Crop Water Stress Index (CWSI) is widely used and its calculation is influenced by the baseline slope for different crop species. This study analyzed the impact of measurement errors on CWSI and emphasized the importance of reliable climatic data and accurate thermal sensors for accurate calculation.

A new color index for vegetation segmentation and classification

Moon-Kyu Lee et al.

Summary: Color vegetation indices play a crucial role in precision agriculture applications by enhancing the color of vegetation pixels and suppressing non-vegetation pixels through a transformation process. This study introduces the Elliptical Color Index (ECI) and demonstrates its superior performance in vegetation segmentation through testing with 240 color images.
