Modeling the spatially heterogeneous relationships between tradeoffs and synergies among ecosystem services and potential drivers considering geographic scale in Bairin Left Banner, China

Chenli Xue et al.

Summary: A comprehensive methodology was developed to quantify the intensities of tradeoffs/synergies among ecosystem services (ESs) and explore the spatial relationships between these relations and socio-ecological drivers. The results showed significant spatial variations in the properties and intensities of tradeoffs/synergies among ESs, which were influenced by diverse drivers. The study also proposed spatially targeted ecological measures to reduce tradeoffs and achieve better synergies among ESs.

The response of key ecosystem services to land use and climate change in Chongqing: Time, space, and altitude

Gao Jie et al.

Summary: Mountainous landscapes, such as those in Chongqing, are highly vulnerable to climate change and human activities. The study found that key ecosystem services, such as water yield and soil export, showed significant variations over time and across altitude. Water yield and soil export decreased with increasing altitude, while carbon storage and habitat quality increased. The findings suggest persistent tradeoffs between water yield and soil conservation, while strong synergies exist between carbon storage and habitat quality.

Multi-scale spatio-temporal analysis of soil conservation service based on MGWR model: A case of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, China

Yuejing Rong et al.

Summary: This study clarifies the drivers of soil conservation service and investigates the multi-scale driving mechanism in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. The results indicate that the dominant drivers of soil conservation service have a wide-ranging scale effect and that the contribution of natural factors exceeds landscape and socioeconomic factors at the region scale. However, at smaller spatial scales, the driving force of landscape and socioeconomic factors tends to increase. Additionally, the drivers of soil conservation service change over time due to regional factors such as land use, economy, and ecological restoration projects.

Driving factors of ecosystem services and their spatiotemporal change assessment based on land use types in the Loess Plateau

Xiaozhen Wang et al.

Summary: A study assessed the carbon sequestration, water yield, and soil conservation in the Loess Plateau from 2000 to 2018. The results showed an increase in these ecosystem services during the study period. Precipitation was identified as the main driving factor for water yield, while vegetation index and slope played significant roles in carbon sequestration and soil conservation. The study highlighted the importance of land use in influencing the ecosystem services in different climatic zones.

Summary: This study analyzes carbon storage changes and the response to land use changes in the main urban area of Chongqing. The results show that the increase in construction land and decrease in cultivated land over the past 20 years have led to a rapid decrease in carbon storage. The consideration of ecological security scenarios in future development planning can increase carbon sinks and ensure ecological security.

Summary: High-intensity human activities have significantly affected the land use/land cover patterns in the Huangshui River Basin, posing challenges to the sustainable development of ecosystems. This study examined the spatiotemporal dynamics of land use/cover in the basin and utilized models to optimize and simulate land use patterns under different scenarios. The findings highlight the changes in ecosystem service value and its sensitivity to land use/cover change. The study provides valuable insights for decision-makers and the public in understanding the importance of ecosystem services and guiding land-use planning.

Hong Huo et al.

Summary: The study investigated the spatiotemporal variation in vegetation cover on the northwestern Yunnan Plateau from 2005 to 2015, revealing a negative overall trend primarily driven by natural factors such as soil type, elevation, geomorphic type, and vegetation type. Human factors played a weaker role in vegetation change, with the interaction of pairwise factors being more important than individual factors in affecting vegetation dynamics.

Integrating ecosystem services and landscape ecological risk into adaptive management: Insights from a western mountain-basin area, China

Jie Gong et al.

Summary: The study found clear spatial differences in both ESs and LER levels in the Bailongjiang watershed, with cropland food production service continuously increasing, and carbon storage, water yield, and biodiversity index first decreasing and then increasing. Regional ecological zoning based on overlay analysis of ESs with LER is effective for providing interactive spatial knowledge for adaptive landscape management. The integrative approach on linking landscape ecological risk with ecosystem services is a comprehensive and helpful methodology for both regional risk reduction and ecosystem services enhancement at landscape scale.

Qing Li et al.

Summary: This study reveals that the average soil erosion rate decreased from 2000 to 2020 in Hubei province, with severe erosion in western mountainous areas and less severe erosion in central plains. Different factors such as land-cover type, precipitation, and normalized difference vegetation index influenced soil erosion differently in different years. Soil erosion projects are most effective when implemented at the town scale, and protecting hotspot areas can significantly reduce total soil erosion in the province.
