Aboveground biomass production and dominant species type determined canopy storage capacity of abandoned grassland communities on semiarid Loess Plateau

Peifeng Xiong et al.

Summary: The study found that canopy and litter storage capacities increased with the abandonment time of the grassland. Dominant species type and aboveground biomass had a significant impact on canopy storage capacity, while there was no significant correlation between species diversity and storage capacity indexes.

Estimation of forage biomass and vegetation cover in grasslands using UAV imagery

Jerome Theau et al.

Summary: Grasslands are widespread and degraded ecosystems, with monitoring traditionally relying on incomplete field measurements. This study tested and compared three UAV-based approaches for estimating forage biomass or vegetation cover in grasslands. The approaches included a volumetric-based biomass estimation model, a regression biomass prediction model, and a vegetation cover classification model based on GNDVI values. Each approach had its strengths and limitations, providing complementary tools for grassland characterization.

Remote sensing of aboveground grass biomass between protected and non-protected areas in savannah rangelands

Timothy Dube et al.

Summary: This study assessed the capability of Landsat-8 OLI sensor in estimating aboveground grass biomass in savannah rangelands, finding that using spectral bands as stand-alone model variables yielded higher accuracies, while vegetation indices showed weaker performance. Combining spectral bands and vegetation indices can improve model performance, providing effective estimation of aboveground grass biomass in savannah rangelands.

A novel UAV-based approach for biomass prediction and grassland structure assessment in coastal meadows

Summary: This study accurately predicted above-ground biomass in coastal meadows using UAV-derived datasets, and assessed grassland structural heterogeneity. The results suggest that continuous, monospecific grazing management may simplify grassland structure, reducing the supply of certain ecosystem services.

Remote sensing inversion of grassland aboveground biomass based on high accuracy surface modeling

Wei Zhou et al.

Summary: Accurate and effective accounting of grassland aboveground biomass (AGB) is essential for grassland carbon storage accounting and pastoral agriculture sustainability. In this study, three machine learning models were used to simulate grassland AGB in the Three-River Source Region of China, with HASM model achieving the best results. The analysis revealed that the highest AGB was located in the eastern and central-southern parts of the TRSR, while the overall trend showed an increase in AGB, attributed to warm and wet climate conditions promoting grass growth in most regions.

Estimating Pasture Biomass Using Sentinel-2 Imagery and Machine Learning

Yun Chen et al.

Summary: This study successfully developed a sequential neural network model for estimating pasture biomass in five dairy farms in northern Tasmania, Australia, using high-resolution imagery and advanced machine learning techniques, resulting in a relatively high prediction accuracy. The research also revealed the impact of in situ measurements, pasture management, and grazing practices on the model's predictions on different farms.

Summary: This study investigated the use of Riegl VUX-1 LiDAR system in estimating aboveground biomass in a grazing platform, and found that maximum canopy height and fractional vegetation coverage were the best predictors. Additionally, different flight altitudes had little effect on the derived vegetation parameters from LiDAR data.

Hui Yu et al.

Summary: Accurate assessments of grassland above-ground biomass are essential for sustainable utilization and protection of grassland resources. This study trained a machine learning model to predict grassland AGB dry weight and found an increasing trend in spatial distribution from northwest to southeast on the Tibetan Plateau. By combining different methods, the model's predictive accuracy was improved.

Summary: This study estimated the spatiotemporal variation in aboveground biomass (AGB) of grasslands in the Three-River Headwaters Region of China from 1982 to 2018 using remote sensing and ground observation data. The results showed an overall increasing trend in grassland AGB, which could be attributed to vegetation greening and increased precipitation.

Combatting global grassland degradation

Richard D. Bardgett et al.

Summary: Grasslands provide crucial ecosystem services, but are often overlooked in sustainable policy. Degradation of grasslands threatens biodiversity, ecosystem services, and human well-being. Strategies to combat degradation and promote restoration include increasing global recognition of grasslands, developing standardized indicators, using scientific innovation for effective restoration, and enhancing knowledge transfer and data sharing. These actions can help halt degradation, enhance restoration success, and protect the socio-economic, cultural, and ecological benefits that grasslands provide.
