Interspecific Competition is Prevalent and Stabilizes Plant Production in a Brackish Marsh Facing Sea Level Rise

Jared R. Gabriel et al.

Summary: In this study, the interactions between tidal marsh plant species and their responses to future change such as higher sea level were investigated. The observational record suggested negative interactions between sedges and grasses, while the functional group removal experiment revealed that competition was the predominant interaction. The results indicate that although sedges will dominate the marsh as sea level rises, grasses may still contribute to biomass and elevation gain.

Surface Water and Groundwater Interactions in Salt Marshes and Their Impact on Plant Ecology and Coastal Biogeochemistry

Pei Xin et al.

Summary: Salt marshes are important ecosystems that provide essential ecological services, but they have been lost globally due to human activities and climate change. The interactions between tidal water and groundwater in salt marshes affect plant growth and biogeochemical exchange with coastal water. However, there are still significant knowledge gaps regarding the hydrological and ecological links in salt marshes and the challenges they face.

Exploring open-source multispectral satellite remote sensing as a tool to map long-term evolution of salt marsh shorelines

Tegan R. Blount et al.

Summary: This study examines the long-term evolution of salt marshes in the Ria Formosa coastal lagoon in Portugal using open-source multispectral satellite remote sensing data and aerial photography surveys. The results show that open-source satellite data can be a useful tool for tracking changes in salt marsh extent, although the spatial resolution of the datasets is a main source of error.

Predicting plant diversity in beach wetland downstream of Xiaolangdi reservoir with UAV and satellite multispectral images

Honglei Zhu et al.

Summary: Accurate and timely acquisition of plant diversity information downstream of the reservoir is helpful to understand the impact mechanism of reservoir operation on wetland plant diversity and formulate reasonable water and sediment regulation strategies. This study used UAV and satellite images to estimate wetland plant diversity and found that most diversity indexes were highly correlated with spectral vegetation indexes. The type of wetland plant community determines the relationship between diversity index and spectral index.

Integrating UAV data for assessing the ecological response of Spartina alterniflora towards inundation and salinity gradients in coastal wetland

Dandan Yan et al.

Summary: This study integrated unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and field sampling data to assess the ecological response of Spartina alterniflora to inundation and salinity gradients. The results showed that soil salinity significantly affected the growth of S. alterniflora. This is the first spatially quantitative analysis to study the ecohydrological mechanism driving the growth of S. alterniflora.

Evaluating the Performance of High Spatial Resolution UAV-Photogrammetry and UAV-LiDAR for Salt Marshes: The Cadiz Bay Study Case

Andrea Celeste Curcio et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the effectiveness of UAV-photogrammetry and UAV-LiDAR techniques in salt marsh habitats, and analyzes the best sensor configuration. The results show that UAV-photogrammetry provides the highest spatial resolution but requires long processing times and is suitable only for small areas, while UAV-LiDAR offers shorter processing times and lighter datasets, with improved effectiveness when combined with multispectral data for vegetation classification.

Global blue carbon accumulation in tidal wetlands increases with climate change

Faming Wang et al.

Summary: Coastal tidal wetlands play a significant role in accumulating organic carbon which can help mitigate climate change. The study shows that globally, tidal wetlands accumulate 53.65 Tg C annually, with factors such as sea level rise, temperature and precipitation affecting the trends. Certain countries are more vulnerable to tidal wetland carbon losses under climate change, while others will experience a significant increase in carbon accumulation.

The morphometric acclimation to depth explains the long-term resilience of the seagrass Cymodocea nodosa in a shallow tidal lagoon

G. Peralta et al.

Summary: The study on Cymodocea nodosa in Cadiz Bay reveals strong seasonality in demographic and shoot dynamic properties, as well as differences in leaf morphometry depending on depth. Despite these differences, there were no significant disparities in meadow production balance between intertidal and subtidal populations, indicating the long-term resilience of the seagrass species. This research contributes to understanding seagrass stability and resilience mechanisms, particularly in the face of climate change.

Estimating Ground Elevation and Vegetation Characteristics in Coastal Salt Marshes Using UAV-Based LiDAR and Digital Aerial Photogrammetry

Daniele Pinton et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the skills of two types of drone-based point clouds, derived from LiDAR and photogrammetric techniques, in estimating ground elevation and vegetation characteristics on a salt marsh. Results show that LiDAR-based techniques provide more accurate reconstructions compared to Digital Aerial Photogrammetry (DAP). The classification procedure for vegetation calculation negligibly improves when RGB images are used as input parameters with the LiDAR-UAV point cloud.

Mapping salt marsh along coastal South Carolina using U-Net

Huixuan Li et al.

Summary: This study utilized a deep learning approach to map salt marshes in estuarine wetlands of South Carolina using multi-temporal images, successfully delineating the distribution of low marshes and high marshes and refining land cover details. The computational power of U-Net allowed for the mitigation of seasonality and tidal influence on marsh classification, making the approach easily adoptable in other coastal areas with available images.

Assessing salt marsh loss and degradation by combining long-term LANDSAT imagery and numerical modelling

Carina L. Lopes et al.

Summary: This study proposes an alternative methodology to identify priority areas for conservation using a combination of LANDSAT satellite remote sensing and numerical modelling. It identifies the most deteriorated salt marshes in central and upper lagoon regions and determines that marsh loss and degradation are primarily due to increased tidal action triggered by deepening lagoon channels. The study predicts that climate-induced mean sea level rise will exacerbate marsh deterioration, emphasizing the importance of protecting and restoring salt marshes.
