Monitoring coastline variations in the Pearl River Estuary from 1978 to 2018 by integrating Canny edge detection and Otsu methods using long time series Landsat dataset

Xinyi Hu et al.

Summary: The study found significant changes in the Pearl River Estuary coastline over the past 40 years, especially in the western area where land reclamation and dam construction had a greater impact. Both natural factors and human activities have influenced the coastline variation in the region.

Comparing the Yangtze and Mississippi River Deltas in the light of coupled natural-human dynamics: Lessons learned and implications for management

Weiguo Zhang et al.

Summary: This article compares the morphological changes, engineering, and management strategies of the Yangtze River Delta and Mississippi River Delta. The study reveals significant differences in deltaic change due to hydrodynamics and human activities. A conceptual model is proposed to provide a holistic understanding of the natural-human coupled delta system and management strategies.

High-resolution satellite images combined with hydrological modeling derive river discharge for headwaters: A step toward discharge estimation in ungauged basins

Qi Huang et al.

Summary: This study presents a methodology for estimating daily continuous discharge using remote sensing and a hydrological model without relying on ground-based measurements. The methodology was successfully tested in ungauged headwaters with narrow river widths and complex terrain, showing the potential for discharge estimation globally and providing implications for satellite-based discharge estimation in high-mountain regions.

Extreme sea level rise along the Indian Ocean coastline: observations and 21st century projections

P. Sreeraj et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic sea-level rise poses challenges to coastal areas globally. The combined influence of rising mean sea level and storm surges exacerbates the extreme sea level along the Indian Ocean coastlines. Rising mean sea level and intensifying tropical cyclones are the primary contributors to the increase in extreme sea level. According to projections, by 2100, the Indian Ocean region will experience the present-day 100 year extreme sea level event annually.

Monitoring Coastline Changes of the Malay Islands Based on Google Earth Engine and Dense Time-Series Remote Sensing Images

Yaxin Ding et al.

Summary: The research on extracting coastline information using remote sensing big data platforms and dense time-series methods to achieve a unified tide level standard is of great significance for coastal dynamic change monitoring and island reef change monitoring. The results show that this method has achieved good results in large-scale monitoring of coastline changes and analyzing the reasons for the Malay Islands coastline changes.

Study on Spatiotemporal Evolution of the Yellow River Delta Coastline from 1976 to 2020

Chengming Li et al.

Summary: The Yellow River Delta in China has shown a spatial pattern of northern landward retreat and southern seaward expansion. In the Qingshuigou region, land area and coastline length initially increased, then stabilized. In the Diaokou region, the land area decrease rate has slowed down over time.

Forecasting shoreline changes along the Egyptian Nile Delta coast using Landsat image series and Geographic Information System

Khalid Dewidar et al.

Summary: This study utilized remote sensing techniques, ground measurements, numerical models, and software analysis methods to predict future shoreline changes along the Nile Delta. The impacts of coastal evolution on human safety and habitats were evaluated, and proposals for coastal protection were made to address the effects of coastal processes and climate change.

Accretion-erosion conversion in the subaqueous Yangtze Delta in response to fluvial sediment decline

Hua Long Luan et al.

Summary: The study observed a transition from net accretion to net erosion in the Yangtze mouth bar and prodelta over the past decades. The critical sediment discharge for net accretion was estimated to be around 218 Mt yr(-1), but the entire study area has now converted to net erosion due to fluctuations in fluvial sediment supply.
