Investigating the Influence of Water Vapor on Heavy Rainfall Events in the Southern Korean Peninsula

Yoo-Jun Kim et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of water vapor on heavy rainfall events in the mountainous regions of the southern Korean Peninsula using rawinsonde and GNSS data. The findings revealed that southeasterly winds led to enhanced precipitation on the leeward side of the mountains. The likelihood of severe rainfall increased in the highest PWV bin (>60 mm). Additionally, the analysis showed that the atmosphere remained moist for 1 hour before and after heavy rainfall.

Summary: This study evaluated the added value of convection-permitting simulation compared to coarse-scale parameterized convection simulation in the spatio-temporal distribution of precipitation over the Iberian Peninsula. While significant improvements were not found for seasonal mean precipitation, there were benefits in representing wet-day precipitation frequency and intensity, as well as extreme events at kilometer-scale resolution. Additionally, differences in precipitation distribution were noted between various observational datasets.

Subseasonal Variation of 2020 Meiyu Rainfall With Extremely Long Duration Over the Yangtze-Huaihe River Basin in China

Shengjie Chen et al.

Summary: It has been observed that the 2020 Meiyu over the Yangtze-Huaihe River Basin (YHRB) exhibited significant subseasonal variation. The anomalously enhanced rainfall shifted southward from the northern YHRB to the southern YHRB, and this shift was closely related to the anomalous Meiyu front circulations. Additionally, the Meiyu rainfall showed a periodic quasi-biweekly oscillation (QBWO), with the cold air activities over East Asia playing a significant role. The western Pacific subtropical high, the subtropical East Asia summer monsoon (SEASM), and the East Asia subtropical westerly jet showed opposite QBWO characteristics in June and July.

Intensification of subhourly heavy rainfall

Hooman Ayat et al.

Summary: There is a significant increase in subhourly extreme rainfall near Sydney over the past 20 years, with a trend of at least 20% per decade. This trend is consistently observed in storms tracked using ground radars, supported by rain-gauge data, and does not appear to be associated with known natural variations. Subhourly rainfall extremes may be increasing substantially faster than those on longer time scales.

Recent Decadal Weakening of the Summertime Rainfall Interannual Variability Over Yellow-Huaihe River Valley Attributable to the Western Pacific Cooling

Summary: This study focuses on the interdecadal transition of summer rainfall interannual variability over the Yellow-Huaihe River valley. It is found that the interannual variability of summer rainfall over the YHRV becomes significantly weakened after the late 2000s. The interdecadal shift of the East Asian jet stream axis and the western Pacific subtropical high are two major factors leading to the interdecadal transition of summer rainfall interannual variability over the YHRV.

Spatiotemporal variability of extreme precipitation at different time scales and quantitative analysis of associated driving teleconnection factors: Insights from Taihu Basin, China

Dingkui Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the spatiotemporal distribution of extreme precipitation (EP) and its relationship with meteorological factors in the Taihu Lake basin (TLB). The results showed that EP in the TLB has significantly increased over the past 54 years, with faster growth in the urban cluster in the northeastern part of the basin. The increase in intensity and maximum precipitation amount was dominant during the plum rain period, while the increase in the number of days of precipitation was dominant during the typhoon period. The study also found that the influence of climate factors on EP was nonlinear, with the intensity of the Western Pacific Subtropical High playing a major role. These findings provide valuable insights for the TLB and other monsoon coastal areas in dealing with extreme climate events.

Urbanization Impacts on Pearl River Delta Extreme Rainfall Sensitivity to Land Cover Change Versus Anthropogenic Heat

Chenxi Hu et al.

Summary: The study found that the increase in rainfall in urban areas is more sensitive to the presence of anthropogenic heat than mere changes in surface properties. Urbanization coupled with intense anthropogenic heat can enhance both the intensity and frequency of extreme rainfall by creating a more conducive environment for strong convection. The enhanced rainfall is supported by moisture supply from the South China Sea and increased water vapor flux convergence over the coastal megacity area.
