Integrating Post-Processing Kinematic (PPK)-Structure-from-Motion (SfM) with Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Photogrammetry and Digital Field Mapping for Structural Geological Analysis

Daniele Cirillo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the Roccacaramanico Conglomerate (RCC) in the central Apennines, which is a calcareousclastic mega-bed within the Late Messinian-Early Pliocene pelitic succession. By using unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technologies and digital mapping, a multi-methodology survey technique was applied to reconstruct the 3D digital outcrop model of the RCC and analyze the fractures and their time-space relationships. The results provide insights into the tectonic evolution of the area and demonstrate the reliability of remote survey techniques compared to direct measurements. Two alternative working methods are proposed for different applications.

Rockfall detection using LiDAR and deep learning

Ioannis Farmakis et al.

Summary: This study explores the potential of integrating complex deep learning architectures into dynamic rockfall database population processes, aiming to relieve experts from manually classifying large amounts of change detection data. Utilizing deep neural networks based on PointNet and PointNet++ architectures, developed on a 5-year change detection database of over 8000 rock slope clusters for training, the models achieve high accuracy levels on the last two data acquisitions and a geologically different rockfall database.

Landslide susceptibility prediction based on image semantic segmentation

Bowen Du et al.

Summary: The study defines landslide susceptibility as a semantic segmentation problem on optical remote sensing images and evaluates six different semantic segmentation models. The results indicate that certain models are more suitable for this problem scenario and the predictive accuracy of models can be further improved by adjusting network architectures.

Rockfall susceptibility and network-ranked susceptibility along the Italian railway

Massimiliano Alvioli et al.

Summary: The study utilizes a data-driven approach to determine rockfall source points and simulate trajectories, extracting probabilistic maps of slope values based on expert mapping of potential source areas. Simulated trajectories are used to analyze rockfall susceptibility of railway segments, resulting in a network-ranked susceptibility map.

Landslide size matters: A new data-driven, spatial prototype

Luigi Lombardo et al.

Summary: The article presents the development of landslide hazard assessment methods and introduces a statistically-based model capable of predicting aggregated landslide extent, which was tested on a global dataset. This new spatial predictive paradigm could be a breakthrough in landslide hazard studies and potentially become part of official landslide risk assessment protocols in the future.

An Integration of UAV-Based Photogrammetry and 3D Modelling for Rockfall Hazard Assessment: The Carcavos Case in 2018 (Spain)

Ilenia G. Gallo et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the combined use of UAV photogrammetry and rockfall numerical simulation to analyze a case of fragmental rockfall, identify source areas and potential risks, and evaluate the effectiveness of mitigation measures. By generating a high-resolution 3D model and conducting numerical simulations, the paths, speeds, impacts, and stopping points of fragmented rocks were determined, leading to the identification of potential hazards and assessment of risk mitigation strategies.
