Using UAV Borne, Multi-Spectral Imaging for the Field Phenotyping of Shoot Biomass, Leaf Area Index and Height of West African Sorghum Varieties under Two Contrasted Water Conditions

Boubacar Gano et al.

Summary: Meeting the increasing food demand of the growing population requires an increase in crop production despite climate changes, especially severe droughts. Sorghum, a drought-adapted cereal, can benefit from its genetic diversity for crop improvement through extensive phenotyping. This study successfully developed and validated a high throughput field phenotyping method for sorghum growth traits under different water conditions using drone-based imagery, showing promising results in estimating leaf area index and biomass.

Crop height estimation based on UAV images: Methods, errors, and strategies

Tianjin Xie et al.

Summary: UAVs have become a promising platform for rapidly and cost-effectively determining the dynamic phenotypic traits of crops in the field. This study compared four rapeseed height estimation methods using UAV images collected at three growth stages, with one method having complete data and the other three having incomplete SA information. Improved methods were developed to construct missing SA information and achieve reasonable accuracy for crop height acquisition both with complete and incomplete data.
