Heavy metal-induced stress in eukaryotic algae-mechanisms of heavy metal toxicity and tolerance with particular emphasis on oxidative stress in exposed cells and the role of antioxidant response

Beatrycze Nowicka

Summary: This review summarizes the knowledge of heavy metal toxicity, oxidative stress, and antioxidant response in eukaryotic algae. The types of ROS and their damage to cellular components are described, followed by detailed characterization of heavy metals, including their properties, sources of contamination, toxicity mechanisms, and stress symptoms. The review also covers low-molecular-weight antioxidants and ROS-detoxifying enzymes, their properties, cellular localization, and their occurrence in algae belonging to different clades. Additionally, other mechanisms providing tolerance to metal ions are briefly outlined at the end.

Insight into biosorption of heavy metals by extracellular polymer substances and the improvement of the efficacy: a review

C. Li et al.

Summary: Heavy metals are continuously released into aquatic environments, posing a threat to public health as they accumulate along the food chain. Conventional remediation methods are inefficient and costly, leading to the discovery of green bio-adsorbents such as EPS, which offer high removal efficiency and low cost. Strengthening EPS adsorption process for heavy metals and improving EPS yield, stability, selectivity, and recoverability are key areas for further research to enhance heavy metals removal.

Biosorption of heavy metals from aqueous solution by various chemically modified agricultural wastes: A review

Hina Iqbal Syeda et al.

Summary: With the global increase in industrialization, the release of toxic pollutants into water bodies, such as heavy metals, has significantly risen. Adsorption is considered a highly efficient and effective method for removing heavy metals, especially using agricultural waste-based biosorbents. Chemical modifications on biosorbents have been found to improve their capacity and longevity. Most adsorption studies use the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models, with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model being the best fit. Ion exchange, electrostatic attraction, and chelation are the primary adsorption mechanisms. The adsorption process is usually spontaneous and endothermic. Biosorbents can be effectively regenerated, especially when using acids as eluents. Practical perspectives on column studies, adsorption performance using industrial wastewater, and cost analysis have been conducted, with the conclusion that agricultural waste-based biosorbents are more cost-effective than traditional adsorbents like activated carbon.

Diethylenetriamine as a selective pyrrhotite depressant: Properties, application, and mitigation strategies

Erin Furnell et al.

Summary: Pyrrhotite, an abundant iron sulphide mineral found in nickel sulphide deposits, is often rejected into tailings during mineral processing due to low economic value and high contribution to SO2 emissions. Using chelating agents like DETA can improve nickel recovery and concentrate grades, but managing them in tailings can be challenging. The stable chelates formed by DETA with Ni2+ and Cu2+ may desorb from Po solids in the tailings management area, leading to excessive concentrations of these metals in effluent. Various strategies for mitigating DETA-metal chelates and degradation methods are discussed in the literature.

Enrichment of the surface functional groups of activated carbon by modification method

Ilknur Demiral et al.

Summary: This study synthesized activated carbon from peach stones and fruit juice industrial wastes, enriching the surface functional groups through HNO3 oxidation. Acid modification significantly affected the surface area and pore structures of the activated carbon, leading to collapse of micropores and an increase in mesopores. By utilizing 69% nitric acid modification, the activated carbon showed increased diversity in surface functional groups and total surface acidity.

Technologies for extraction of oil from oilseeds and other plant sources in retrospect and prospects: A review

Heena Rani et al.

Summary: Vegetable oils can be extracted from oilseeds and other parts of plants, with traditional methods being low in efficacy and mechanical pressing simple but inefficient. Chemical extraction methods are preferred globally for their higher efficiency, but their environmental and health hazards have led to the development of new technologies. New eco-friendly techniques have advantages like shorter extraction time and higher yields, offering a solution to the drawbacks of traditional methods.
