Effects of void content on the moisture uptake and mechanical strength of a glass/epoxy composite

Mustafa O. Ayanoglu et al.

Summary: The effect of voids on the moisture uptake and mechanical properties of a glass/epoxy composite was investigated. Voids were created by mixing a foaming agent with the liquid epoxy resin. Micrographs showed that the voids were spherical in shape and distributed within the matrix and at the fiber/matrix interface. Analysis revealed that the void content was close to zero in the void-free composite and 21% in the void-containing composite. The void-containing composite absorbed significantly more water than the void-free composite. The presence of voids greatly reduced the transverse modulus and strength of the composite by about 70%.

The effect of environmental ageing on the interphase in glass fibre - vinyl ester composites

James L. Thomason et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of environmental ageing on the interfacial shear strength of glass fiber-vinyl ester microbond samples. It reviews and discusses the scale-related issues of estimating water absorption levels in microbond samples and proposes a solution based on Fickian diffusion. The research finds that the interphase strength of microdroplets aged in water at different temperatures varies, with immediate loss observed in higher temperatures. Electron microscope images suggest the development of a bi-phasic microstructure in the aged microdroplets, which is confirmed by DMA analysis on thin films.

Microbond testing of the interface in glass fibre vinylester composites

James L. Thomason et al.

Summary: Careful sample preparation is crucial in ensuring that the results obtained from the microbond test accurately reflect the true material characteristics, and are not influenced by artifacts of preparation techniques. Higher IFSS values were achieved by adjusting the cure schedule and using glass fibers with a full sizing treatment.
