Hedysarum coronarium-Based Green Composites Prepared by Compression Molding and Fused Deposition Modeling

Roberto Scaffaro et al.

Summary: An innovative green composite was produced by adding Hedysarum coronarium flour to a starch-based biodegradable polymer. The influence of filler content on processability, morphology, and mechanical properties of the composites was investigated. The results showed that FDM samples had higher mechanical properties compared to CM ones, and the filler effectively acted as reinforcement in the composites.

An innovative route to prepare in situ graded crosslinked PVA graphene electrospun mats for drug release

Emmanuel Fortunato Gulino et al.

Summary: We present a fast and one-step method to obtain PVA/graphene/chlorhexidine nanofibrous membranes with a crosslinking gradient. The crucial role of graphene in promoting heat transfer throughout the entire structure is revealed, leading to 70-80% crosslinking degrees and preventing delamination issues. The release behavior of the materials can be tuned from instantaneous/burst to sustained release (up to 500 h) by adjusting formulation and preparation technique.

Structural disorganization of cereal, tuber and bean starches in aqueous ionic liquid at room temperature: Role of starch granule surface structure

Ke Zan et al.

Summary: The structural disorganization of different starches in an aqueous ionic liquid (IL) solution is influenced by the surface characteristics of the granules. Normal cereal starches are easily affected, pea starch is destructed within 6 hours, while high-amylose maize starch and others with dense outer layers are more resistant.

Effects of amylose and amylopectin chain-length distribution on the kinetics of long-term rice starch retrogradation

Cheng Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the long-term retrogradation kinetics of 10 different rice starches and found that amylose content has a parabolic relationship with the melting conclusion temperature and enthalpy of long-term retrograded starches. Additionally, the amount of amylose short-medium chains and amylopectin medium chains were negatively and positively correlated with the melting onset temperature of long-term retrograded starches, respectively. The findings could be applied in the rice industry to improve the textural attributes of cooked rice.

Exploring the effect of humidity on thermoplastic starch films using the quartz crystal microbalance

Matthew D. Eaton et al.

Summary: The quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) is used as a non-destructive and efficient tool to characterize thin thermoplastic starch (TPS) films, revealing that starch films plasticized with an ionic liquid show superior plasticization and stabilized properties at low humidity compared to those plasticized with glycerol.
