Plasma Surface Engineering of Natural and Sustainable Polymeric Derivatives and Their Potential Applications

Renjith Rajan Pillai et al.

Summary: Recently, there has been significant attention towards natural and synthetic polymers as alternatives to non-renewable materials. Surface-modified natural fibers (NFs), polymers, and their derivatives have been extensively studied to reduce pollution and energy consumption. However, challenges in terms of durability, strength, and processing still exist for NFs. Low-temperature plasma (LTP) surface treatment has shown promise in tailoring surface properties of materials without affecting their bulk properties. This article provides an overview of the latest developments in surface engineering of NFs, polymers, and composites for diverse applications including environmental remediation, packaging, biomedical devices, and sensors.

Investigation of Soft Matter Nanomechanics by Atomic Force Microscopy and Optical Tweezers: A Comprehensive Review

Alessandro Magazzu et al.

Summary: Soft matter displays various intrinsic physico-chemical attributes, and their mechanical properties significantly impact their performance. Biomechanics investigates the rigidity of these systems under exerted load forces, which affects cellular transduction processes in health and disease. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and optical tweezers (OT) can determine the biomechanical parameters of these systems at the single-molecule level, making them valuable tools for characterizing mechanical forces in soft matter. This review highlights the capabilities of AFM and OT compared to classical bulk techniques and presents recent examples of nanomechanical measurements in various soft matter systems.

Effect of Water-Resistant Properties of Kraft Paper (KP) Using Sulfur Hexafluoride (SF6) Plasma Coating

Pornchai Rachtanapun et al.

Summary: The use of SF6 plasma treatment improves the water resistance of Kraft paper. The optimal treatment conditions are 200 mTorr pressure, 50 Watts power, and 5 minutes treatment time. Increasing the treatment time enhances the contact angle, water absorption time, and Cobb test values of the paper, while the thickness and tensile strength remain relatively constant.

Optical characterization of non-thermal plasma jet energy carriers for effective catalytic processing of industrial wastewaters

M. Y. Naz et al.

Summary: An argon plasma jet was sustained in open air to treat industrial wastewater containing mixed textile dyes and heavy metals. The use of photocatalytic TiO2 enhanced plasma treatment efficiency, especially for degradation of dyes, by producing mixed anatase and rutile phases of TiO2. The plasma jet emitted excited argon, OH, excited nitrogen, excited oxygen, ozone, and nitric oxide, which decomposed organic pollutants and separated heavy metals from water samples.
