Synthesis of Hyperbranched Flame Retardants with Varied Branched Chains' Rigidity and Performance of Modified Epoxy Resins

Jingyuan Hu et al.

Summary: In order to improve the fire safety and mechanical properties of epoxy resins, researchers synthesized three epoxy-terminated hyperbranched flame retardants (EHBFRs) with different branches. These EHBFRs were added to the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and cured with 4, 4-diaminodiphenylmethane (DDM). The results showed that the EHBFRs greatly enhanced the fire safety of the cured resins and improved their mechanical properties.

Elastic Fibre Prestressing Mechanics within a Polymeric Matrix Composite

Hui Chen et al.

Summary: The elastic fibre prestressing (EFP) technique is used to balance thermal residual stress in curing polymeric composites. By prestressing continuous fibre reinforcements and impregnating them into a polymeric matrix, an elastically prestressed polymeric matrix composite (EPPMC) is produced. However, the impact of EFP on the dynamic mechanical performance and viscoelasticity of composites is not well understood. Through a theoretical model and experimental testing, this study investigates the effects of EFP on static and dynamic mechanical properties, as well as viscoelastic creep performance. The findings suggest that there is an optimal level of EFP to maximize prestress benefits, but it can be detrimental to the fibre/matrix interface. The proposed EFP mechanisms provide insights into in-plane stress evolutions in polymeric composites.

Effect of waterborne epoxy resin sizing on the surface and properties of high-strength-high-modulus polyimide fibers

Li Zhu et al.

Summary: The use of waterborne epoxy resin (WEP) sizing agents to modify the surface of high-strength-high-modulus polyimide (PI) fibers improves the interface adhesion between the fibers and epoxy resin (EP) matrix. Increasing the WEP sizing agent content results in higher surface roughness, activated carbon percentage, and surface energy of the PI fibers, while slightly decreasing their mechanical and thermal properties. The optimal WEP sizing concentration of 2 wt% significantly enhances the mechanical properties of PI fibers and EP composites.

Surface modification of polyimide fibers for high-performance composite by using oxygen plasma and silane coupling agent treatment

Cheng Lu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the use of oxygen plasma and silane coupling agent composite treatment to modify the surface of polyimide fibers in order to enhance the interfacial properties. The results showed that plasma treatment improved the etching spots on the fiber surface, and the highest value of surface O atom content, O/C ratio and C-O(H) bond ratio was achieved after 27 min plasma treatment. After composite treatment, the surface Si atomic content reached the highest value after 27 min plasma pretreatment. The interfacial shear strength of the polyimide fibers in the composite materials increased by up to 36.98% and 61.68% respectively with oxygen plasma treatment and composite treatment, while the transverse tensile strength of the composites increased by 103.73% compared to the pristine specimens.
