Green synthesis of graphene-hydroxyapatite nanocomposites with improved mechanical properties for bone implant materials

Purna Chandra Sekhar Boyapati et al.

Summary: Here, the authors present an in-situ synthesis of reduced graphene oxide-hydroxyapatite (RGO-HA) nanocomposites using a green reduction protocol. Different weight percentages of RGO in HA were obtained by reducing the precursor solution with custard apple leaf extract. The mechanical properties of the RGO-HA nanocomposites were investigated, and the presence of graphene in the composites was confirmed. The results showed that the addition of graphene enhanced the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites.

Dependence of antimicrobial properties on site-selective arrangement and concentration of bioactive Cu2+ions in tricalcium phosphate

V. Dina Deyneko et al.

Summary: Cu-doped solid solutions Ca10.5-xCux(PO4)7 with beta-Ca3(PO4)2 (beta-TCP) structure were synthesized. The location of Cu2+ ions in the structure was investigated and found to be influenced by the Cu concentration. The antibacterial properties and biocompatibility of the samples were studied, revealing the importance of phase purity.

Antimicrobial properties of co-doped tricalcium phosphates Ca3-2x(M′M′′)x(PO4)2 (M = Zn2+, Cu2+, Mn2+ and Sr2+)

Dina V. Deyneko et al.

Summary: Substituted and co-substituted beta-tricalcium phosphate-based solid solutions were synthesized via solid-state route. The crystal structures, chemical compositions, and antibacterial properties were characterized. The results showed that the occupation of crystal sites by doping ions played a crucial role in the antimicrobial activity of the samples.

Synthesis and Phase Transformations of Compounds in the Mg4Na(PO4)3-Mg3(PO4)2 System as Promising Phases for the Fabrication of Bioceramics

I. I. Preobrazhenskiy et al.

Summary: The phase transformations of Mg4Na(PO4)(3) and MgNaPO4 in the Mg4Na(PO4)(3)-Mg3(PO4)(2) system were studied using thermal analysis and X-ray diffraction. The optimal conditions for preparing phase-pure MgNaPO4 were determined by solid-state synthesis and heat treatment, which resulted in polymorphic transformations of this compound at certain temperatures. The synthesized compounds have potential applications in the fabrication of bioceramic materials for osteoplasty.
