Polysaccharide from Spirulina platensis Evokes Antitumor Activity in Gastric Cancer Cells via Modulation of Galectin-3 and Exhibited Cyto/DNA Protection: Structure-Function Study

Vinayak Uppin et al.

Summary: Spirulina polysaccharide (Sp) exhibits inhibitory effects on galectin-3 modulation and cell proliferation in gastric cancer cells. It also shows significant inhibition of hemeagglutination mediated by galectin-3 and provides cytoprotective effects. These findings suggest the potential therapeutic application of Sp in gastric cancer management.

Microbial polysaccharides: An emerging family of natural biomaterials for cancer therapy and diagnostics

Prateeksha et al.

Summary: Microbial polysaccharides (MPs) have diverse structural and functional properties and hold great potential in advanced biomedical science. They are biodegradable, hemocompatible, and capable of mimicking the natural extracellular matrix microenvironment, making them ideal for cancer chemotherapy. Many studies have demonstrated that MPs can inhibit tumor development and prolong survival through various mechanisms.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

LRP1B Expression as a Putative Predictor of Response to Pegylated Liposomal Doxorubicin Treatment in Ovarian Cancer

Isabel J. Dionisio de Sousa et al.

Summary: The study revealed that OC cells with increased LRP1B expression were more sensitive to PLD, and the LRP1B staining score was associated with clinicopathological features, response to therapy, and survival outcomes. Higher levels of LRP1B were linked to prolonged progression-free survival, especially in patients treated with and responding to PLD.
