Using molecular dynamics simulations to study the non-thermal effects of microwave radiation on the mechanism of char gasification

Jian Su et al.

Summary: The chemical effects of alternating electric fields on char gasification were studied through molecular dynamics simulations and quantum chemical calculations. The results show that electric fields can significantly promote the gasification reaction rate of char, and the effect increases exponentially with the field intensity. The electric field also affects the adsorption and desorption processes by promoting the formation of free radicals, increasing the polarity of the char edge, and weakening the curling of char macromolecules. The findings suggest that alternating electric fields have a remarkable impact on the field of solid fuel gasification.

Plastic wastes in the time of COVID-19: Their environmental hazards and implications for sustainable energy resilience and circular bio-economies

Prabhat Kumar Rai et al.

Summary: The global pollution caused by plastic waste is a well-known issue linked to trade, mass consumption, and disposal of plastic products. The COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting increase in indoor activities have worsened the problem. This study explores the impact of increased plastic waste on the environment and human health, as well as sustainable management options and life cycle assessment approaches.

Research on Waste Combustion in the Aspect of Mercury Emissions

Agnieszka Kijo-Kleczkowska et al.

Summary: This paper presents the importance of waste combustion/co-combustion by conducting tests on fuels of different compositions. The authors analyze the materials and ashes, as well as the mercury content in them, and find that coke waste and sewage sludge have high mercury content. The addition of a polymer to coal fuels reduces mercury emissions in exhaust gases.

Analysis and Sources Identification of Atmospheric PM10 and Its Cation and Anion Contents in Makkah, Saudi Arabia

Turki M. Habeebullah et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the atmospheric water-soluble cation and anion contents of PM10 in Makkah, Saudi Arabia. The concentrations of PM10 exceeded air quality limits set by the WHO and Saudi Arabia at all five sites. The cations and anions made a significant contribution to the PM10 concentrations, with SO42-, NO3-, Ca2+, Na+, and Cl- being the major contributors. Four principal components accounted for most of the variation in PM10 concentrations. The major emission sources identified were road traffic, mineral dust, industries and construction-demolition work, and seaspray and marine aerosols. This research highlights the need for further analysis of metal contents and their spatial-temporal variability in Makkah.

Non-Thermal Plasma Treatment Coupled with a Photocatalyst for Antimicrobial Performance of Ihram Cotton Fabric

Ahmed Rida Galaly et al.

Summary: During the Hajj and Umrah seasons, all Muslim pilgrims are required to wear Ihram clothes. However, eliminating the spread of microbes attached to the cotton fabric of Ihram presents a challenge. Recent targeted fashion research has proposed a new industrial treatment using atmospheric pressure plasma jet and photocatalytic nanomaterials to treat Escherichia coli attached to cotton fabric samples.

Mercury release from municipal solid waste in the thermal treatment process

Tadeusz Dziok et al.

Summary: The use of municipal solid waste for energy generation is important, however, the release of mercury from waste is a significant concern. This study investigated the behavior of mercury release during thermal treatment of different types of waste and found that textiles released mercury most easily while plastics had the lowest release. The research suggests a potential for producing low-mercury alternative fuel through thermal treatment of waste.

Source Apportionment of Atmospheric PM10 in Makkah Saudi Arabia by Modelling Its Ion and Trace Element Contents with Positive Matrix Factorization and Generalised Additive Model

Turki M. Habeebullah et al.

Summary: This study characterized the emission sources of PM10 by analysing its trace elements and ions contents. The PM10 concentrations in Makkah exceeded air quality standards, and the GAM model and PMF identified the main sources of pollution, including road traffic, industrial emissions, restaurant and dwelling emissions, and fossil fuel combustion.

Modelling the Effect of COVID-19 Lockdown on Air Pollution in Makkah Saudi Arabia with a Supervised Machine Learning Approach

Turki M. Habeebullah et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on O-3, NO2, and PM10 in the Makkah region. The results show that during the lockdown, the levels of NO2 and PM10 decreased, while the level of O-3 increased. The machine learning approach indicates that after considering changes in weather conditions, the reductions in NO2 and PM10 are relatively smaller, and the increase in O-3 is also smaller.

Comparative evaluation of microwave and conventional gasification of different coal types: Experimental reaction studies

Candice Ellison et al.

Summary: The effects of gasifier conditions on the gasification characteristics of different types of coal were evaluated, showing higher syngas yields and selectivity under microwave heating compared to conventional heating. Carbon conversion efficiency and cold gas efficiency were found to be highest for coals gasified under microwave irradiation, indicating a dependence of gasification reactivity on coal type.

Theoretical and Experimental Study of the Effect of Plasma Characteristics on the Mechanical Properties of Ihram Cotton Fabric

Ahmed Rida Galaly et al.

Summary: Theoretical and experimental investigations of the radial distribution function of electron temperature in low-density plasma and weakly ionized argon gas are provided. The results show that electron temperatures decrease with an increasing product of radial distance and gas pressures. Comparison of different configurations reveals that generated plasma temperatures decrease and densities increase. The radial distribution function accurately depicts a dramatic decrease for certain scenarios. Furthermore, the mechanical characteristics of treated and pre-treated cotton fabric samples under different plasma cell discharge configurations are compared.

Char reactivity and kinetics based on the dynamic char structure during gasification by CO2

Mengjie Liu et al.

Summary: Coal char reactivity is crucial for gasifier design and operation, and is dynamic with reaction during gasification. In-situ char reactivity increases and then decreases due to gas switch step, graphitization degree increase, and inhibition effect of minerals, while ex-situ char reactivity is initially controlled by chemical structure and later by catalytic activity of minerals. The unreaction core model (URCM) is suitable for interpreting gasification kinetics based on dynamic char structure.
