Bitumen improvement with bio-oil and natural or organomodified montmorillonite: Structure, rheology, and adhesion of composite asphalt binders

Anastasiya Y. Yadykova et al.

Summary: The use of nanoscale particles and modifiers from renewable raw materials is a modern approach to improve material properties. This study examines the combined application of montmorillonite nanoparticles and bio-oil to enhance the properties of bitumen binder. The addition of 10% bio-oil maximizes the adhesion of bitumen to silicate surfaces without affecting its fluidity. Hydrophilic particles reduce the viscosity of bitumen and shift its solid-liquid transition point towards lower temperatures, while hydrophobic clay significantly improves the elasticity, stiffness, cohesion, and adhesion of bitumen.

Summary: This study developed a diffusion-controlled model to characterize the emission behaviors of cumulative volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from automotive solvent-based paint sludge, and validated the model using environmental data in a ventilated test chamber. The study found that the model is more accurate in predicting the release of hydrophobic VOCs.

The Investigation of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) Emissions in Environmentally Friendly Modified Asphalt

Shuoqiu Chen et al.

Summary: Asphalt pavements are widely used in road engineering, but the release of VOCs from asphalt can have negative impacts on the environment and human health. This study aimed to develop environmentally friendly modified asphalt by adding different types of modifiers to 70# virgin asphalt, and analyze its performance. The research explored the inhibitory effect of different combinations of modifiers on VOCs emissions from asphalt using a self-designed device. The VOCs emission curves of modified asphalt at different temperatures were examined, and the basic physical properties of the environmentally friendly modified asphalt were also tested.

Summary: This study compares the VOCs emission assessment between actual construction sites and laboratory simulations, finding that the composition and content of VOCs in asphalt have significant dependence on heating temperature. Experimental simulations in the laboratory can effectively signal the amount and composition of VOCs released in practical construction sites.

Dynamic pyrolysis behaviors, products, and mechanisms of waste rubber and polyurethane bicycle tires

Xiaojie Tang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pyrolysis behavior, gaseous products, and reaction mechanisms of waste bicycle tires (RT) and polyurethane tires (PUT) using thermogravimetry (TG), TG-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR), and pyrolysis-gas chromato-graphy/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). The results showed that the decomposition of PUT was easier compared to RT, as confirmed by kinetic, thermodynamic, and comprehensive pyrolysis index data. The pyrolysis mechanism models for RT were described by two-dimensional diffusion and two second-order models, while PUT was best described by three consecutive reaction-order models.
