Enhanced osteogenesis and angiogenesis of biphasic calcium phosphate scaffold by synergistic effect of silk fibroin coating and zinc doping

Teliang Lu et al.

Summary: This study applied zinc doping and silk fibroin coating to biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) scaffold, and successfully improved the scaffold's compressive strength, osteogenesis, and angiogenesis. The scaffold coated with silk fibroin showed a 3-fold increase in compressive strength without compromising its porosity. Zinc doping and silk fibroin coating synergistically enhanced the osteogenic and angiogenic properties of cells.

Summary: This experimental study compared the physical characteristics of different bioceramics and evaluated the activity and differentiation of rabbit adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells on these ceramic substrates. Strontium-doped hydroxyapatite (SrHA) was found to significantly enhance the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells towards bone lineage, making it a promising material for hard tissue implantation and drug delivery.

PCL/Si-Doped Multi-Phase Calcium Phosphate Scaffolds Derived from Cuttlefish Bone

Antonia Ressler et al.

Summary: This study synthesized silicon-doped biomimetic multi-phase composite scaffolds using simple and inexpensive methods. The scaffolds showed good mechanical and biological properties, with enhanced tissue adsorption and cell compatibility by introducing silicon doping and PCL coating. The composite scaffolds maintained the highly porous structure of cuttlefish bone, making them suitable for bone tissue regeneration applications.

Material-Assisted Strategies for Osteochondral Defect Repair

Constance Lesage et al.

Summary: The osteochondral (OC) unit is essential for joint lubrication and bone constraint transmission. Currently, there is no curative treatment for OC defects, making OC regeneration a medical challenge. Over the past two decades, tissue engineering strategies have been proposed, but successful clinical translation has been limited. This systematic review provides insights into material-assisted strategies for OC regeneration, including therapeutic potential and evaluation methods.

Effect of silicon or cerium doping on the anti-inflammatory activity of biphasic calcium phosphate scaffolds for bone regeneration

Hyun-Woo Kim et al.

Summary: Biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) bioceramics have attracted attention as bone substitutes due to their similar composition to bone mineral. This study developed a method to fabricate microporous BCP scaffolds containing silicon or cerium, and found that the silicon or cerium doping influenced the biological activity and bone-forming ability of the scaffolds. Ce-BCP exhibited the most effective cell proliferation and osteogenic differentiation, suppressing the expression of bone-active cytokines through anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative effects.

Summary: Bi-phasic calcium phosphates (BCPs) are promising materials for bone graft substitutes. This study investigates the structural role of supplemental cation-doping in BCPs and its influence on biological effects. The results show that double Mg-Sr doping in BCPs leads to the highest β-TCP/hydroxyapatite mass concentration ratio.

Summary: The study focused on developing multifunctional biphasic calcium phosphate scaffolds coated with biopolymers loaded with antibiotic drug Rifampicin. The drug release profiles were different between PCL and PEU-coated scaffolds, with PCL showing a faster burst release. The effectiveness of the scaffolds in inhibiting bacterial growth depends on the specific bacterial strain and the type of polymer coating, influencing the drug release behavior.

Copper-Doped Biphasic Calcium Phosphate Powders: Dopant Release, Cytotoxicity and Antibacterial Properties

Aurelie Jacobs et al.

Summary: This study investigated the cytotoxicity and antibacterial properties of Cu-doped Biphasic Calcium Phosphate (BCP) powders, showing no cytotoxicity and the release of less than 12 ppm of copper into the biological medium. The Cu-doped biomaterials exhibited strong antibacterial activity against MSSA, MRSA and E. coli, releasing approximately 2.5 ppm after 24 hours of incubation. The antibacterial effect was also influenced by the culture medium used, with different concentrations of Cu2+ required to kill bacteria in different mediums.
