Smart dental materials for antimicrobial applications

Carolina Montoya et al.

Summary: Smart biomaterials that can sense and react to physiological or external environmental stimuli have seen significant growth in the field of dentistry for antimicrobial applications. These biomaterial systems offer improved efficacy and controllable bio-functionalities to prevent infections and extend the lifespan of dental devices. This review article presents the current state-of-the-art and limitations of bioactive and stimuli-responsive dental materials, and discusses their antimicrobial mechanisms, applications, and potential obstacles in developing clinically relevant technologies.

Microcapsules based on alginate and guar gum for co-delivery of hydrophobic antitumor bioactives

Louhana M. Reboucas et al.

Summary: The study aimed to develop a polysaccharide microcapsule using guar gum and sodium alginate for the controlled release of hesperidin and betulinic acid, for anticancer application. The microcapsules showed high encapsulation efficiency for both drugs and were found to be biologically safe in in vivo tests. In vitro cytotoxicity studies confirmed their potential as an anticancer formulation.

Polysaccharide-based blend films as a promising material for food packaging applications: physicochemical properties

Vishram D. Hiremani et al.

Summary: This study fabricated eco-friendly blend films based on chitosan and oxidized maize starch using the solution casting method. The interaction between the components of the films was confirmed, and the presence of hydrogen bonding enhanced the elongation properties of the films. The blend films exhibited improved barrier properties and resistance to oxidative deterioration caused by UV radiation. The films were also found to be miscible over the entire composition range. These results suggest that the prepared blend films have potential applications in food packaging.

Comparing the effect of Thymus spp. essential oils on Candida auris

Rita Ribeiro et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the effects of several essential oils (EOs) from Thymus spp. on Candida auris biofilm. Results showed different antifungal activities among the EOs, and the differences in their chemical compositions could explain these variations. Thymus vulgaris and Thymus zygis oils demonstrated the greatest antifungal effects and could be promising alternatives for the treatment of C. auris infections.

Chemical Composition and Antioxidant Activity of the Essential Oils of Citral-Rich Chemotype Cinnamomum camphora and Cinnamomum bodinieri

Qingyan Ling et al.

Summary: This study investigated the chemical composition and antioxidant activity of essential oils from citral-rich chemotypes of Cinnamomum camphora and Cinnamomum bodinieri. The results indicated that the antioxidant activity was significantly correlated to oxygenated monoterpenes. The N7 variety of C. bodinieri exhibited the best antioxidant profile and could be a potential candidate for pharmaceutical and cosmetic development.

An environmental-friendly oil-based dust suppression microcapsules: Structure with chitosan derivative as capsule wall

Gang Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, environmentally friendly microcapsules were developed using chitosan quaternary ammonium salt and sodium alginate as shell materials, and rapeseed oil as the core material. These microcapsules effectively reduced the dangers of open pit coal mine dust to coal miners. The microcapsules exhibited good coating properties, sustained release properties, and dust suppression effects. They also had good water retention performance and degradability, making them environmentally friendly.

Temperature-Responsive Polymer Brush Coatings for Advanced Biomedical Applications

Svyatoslav Nastyshyn et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the fabrication and characterization methods of temperature-responsive polymer brush coatings (TRPBCs), and presents their potential applications, advantages, and disadvantages. Special attention is given to the thermo-responsibility mechanisms of TRPBCs, and their applications in temperature-switchable bacteria killing, temperature-controlled protein adsorption, cell culture, and temperature-controlled adhesion/detachment of cells and tissues are considered. The specific criteria required for desired biomedical applications of TRPBCs are presented and discussed.

Encapsulation of volatile compounds in liquid media: Fragrances, flavors, and essential oils in commercial formulations

Marianna Mamusa et al.

Summary: Microencapsulation techniques have been significantly advanced since 1957 and are now widely applied in consumer products. Commercial products currently make use of rigid polymer-based microcapsules with excellent release properties, but they lack biocompatibility and biodegradability, leading to microplastic pollution. Therefore, there is a need to address new encapsulation strategies to tackle environmental issues.
