Deformation Behavior of 3D Printed Auxetic Structures of Thermoplastic Polymers: PLA, PBAT, and Blends

Jonas Hufert et al.

Summary: Auxetic structures have a unique property to expand transversely when loaded due to their negative Poisson's ratio. This behavior is determined by the structure rather than the materials used, allowing for new design possibilities. The complex geometry of auxetic structures makes additive manufacturing processes the cost-effective production method. This project focuses on producing and characterizing auxetic structures using polylactide acid (PLA), polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT), and their blends, with a specific emphasis on their Poisson's ratio.

Numerical investigation of the mechanical properties of 2D and 3D auxetic structures

Suleyman Nazif Orhan et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comparative numerical study of different 2D and 3D auxetic structures, and investigates the characteristics and mechanical properties of elliptic holes and lozenge grids in the 3D case. The findings show that the elliptical holes structure exhibits a higher negative Poisson's ratio and the 3D re-entrant and 2D arrowhead structures outperform the other auxetics in terms of Young's modulus and stiffness values.

Biodegradation Behavior of Degradable Mulch with Poly (Butylene Adipate-co-Terephthalate) (PBAT) and Poly (Butylene Succinate) (PBS) in Simulation Marine Environment

Bo Liu et al.

Summary: PBAT and PBS, polyester materials with excellent biodegradability under soil and compost conditions, have scarce research on their degradation process in the marine environment. This study developed a realistic simulation marine environment and investigated the biodegradation behavior of PBAT and PBS mulch in it. The research found that the aliphatic polyester structure, lower molecular weight, higher carboxyl end group content, and the involvement of inorganic fillers facilitate the degradation of polyester in the marine environment.

Tensile Behavior of 3D Printed Polylactic Acid (PLA) Based Composites Reinforced with Natural Fiber

Eliana M. Agaliotis et al.

Summary: In this study, natural fiber-reinforced composite (NFRC) filaments for 3D printing were prepared using polylactic acid (PLA) reinforced with henequen flour. The experiments showed that the density, porosity, and crystallinity of the NFRCs increased with the flour content. The NFRCs exhibited lower Young's modulus compared to the printed PLA. At low flour content, the NFRCs showed improved tensile properties due to the reinforcement effect of henequen fibers. However, at high flour contents, the NFRCs exhibited decreased maximum stress, likely due to particle agglomeration and resulting defects.

The Effects of Chain-Extending Cross-Linkers on the Mechanical and Thermal Properties of Poly(butylene adipate terephthalate)/Poly(lactic acid) Blown Films

Juliana V. C. Azevedo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of four multifunctional chain-extending cross-linkers (CECL) on the processability, mechanical performance, and structure of PBAT and PLA blends produced using film blowing technology. The results indicate that the CECL-modified blends do not generally endure thermo-oxidation over time and different CECL have varying effects on the structures of the compounds, with 1,3-phenylenebisoxazoline showing the most synergetic effect.
