Dissolving microneedle patches-mediated percutaneous delivery of tetramethylpyrazine for rheumatoid arthritis treatment

Weiman Zhao et al.

Summary: Recently, transdermal treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has gained attention for its ability to improve patient compliance and reduce gastrointestinal side effects. In this study, tetramethylpyrazine-loaded dissolving microneedle patches (TMP-DMNPs) were used to effectively deliver TMP through the stratum corneum. In vitro experiments showed that DMNPs promoted transdermal penetration of TMP compared to TMP-cream. Animal models further demonstrated the therapeutic effects of dissolving microneedles in reducing paw swelling and inhibiting synovial tissue damage.

Formulation and characterization of thiolated chitosan/polyvinyl acetate based microneedle patch for transdermal delivery of dydrogesterone

Amna Khalid et al.

Summary: Microneedle patches made of thiolated chitosan (TCS) and polyvinyl acetate (PVA) were developed for the systemic delivery of dydrogesterone (DYD). The microneedle patch showed sustained release of DYD and good penetration into the skin, indicating its potential as an effective transdermal delivery system.

Microneedles for transdermal drug delivery using clay-based composites

Farzaneh Sabbagh et al.

Summary: Clays have a specific structure that enables them to interact with drugs and control drug release, making them a powerful drug delivery system. Transdermal delivery is a method of drug administration that avoids drug transformation in the liver. Recent studies have shown that adding 5wt% clay is suitable for transdermal drug delivery. This review discusses clay-based polymer microneedles, mechanisms of clay-drug interactions, and antimicrobial effects of clays. It also explores carriers for clay transdermal drug delivery and in vitro drug release from clay-drug composites.

DMSO as an auxiliary solvent in the fabrication of homogeneous chitin-based films obtaining from an ionic liquid process

Dawid Kasprzak et al.

Summary: A novel preparation procedure has been designed for the fabrication of homogeneous chitin films, based on processing biopolymers in ionic liquid-based solvents with the assistance of dimethyl sulfoxide co-solvent. The concept of reduced viscosity allows for easier manufacture of chitin compared to traditional methods, while also reducing the amount of ionic liquid consumed for biopolymer dissolution. Additionally, chitin/cellulose composite films were prepared and characterized, with properties that combine features of pure cellulose and pure chitin films.
