Insights into the micromechanical response of adhesive joint with stochastic surface micro-roughness

Xing-er Wang et al.

Summary: Micro-roughness at the adhesion surface plays a significant role in the structural behavior of adhesive joints, but there is limited research on the micromechanical mechanism. This study developed a particle-based model with stochastic microstructural features to capture refined multi-scale responses. Experimental tests and numerical simulations were conducted to examine the influences of actual micro-roughness on micromechanical behaviors and failure mechanisms.

A novel approach to the impact modification of PLA

Milan Ferdinand et al.

Summary: The study investigates the concept of using synthetic polymer fibers, such as PET and PVA, as impact modifiers for PLA. These fibers moderately increase stiffness and considerably enhance fracture resistance. The impact modification remains effective even at -20 degrees Celsius, which is not achievable by traditional methods. The improvement in impact resistance is determined by local processes and fiber content, with the mechanism depending on fiber characteristics and interfacial adhesion. Among the reinforcements studied, PVA fibers prove to be the best impact modifiers, providing a 5 GPa stiffness and 15 kJ/m2 impact resistance that is valuable for structural applications and has not been achieved before.

The double-K fracture model: A state-of-the-art review

Xing Yin et al.

Summary: This article reviews the widespread usage of the double-K fracture model in the field of engineering material fracture over the past three decades. As the recommended method for testing concrete fracture properties, the double-K fracture model has gained popularity due to its advantages in analytic solution and simple test methods. The article provides a theoretical basis and development of the double-K fracture model, discusses its application in materials and engineering, and examines its applicability to negative geometry through analytical and numerical approaches. It concludes with a concise summary and future work on the double-K fracture model.

Cyclic fatigue failure of TPU using a crack propagation approach

Giorgia Scetta et al.

Summary: The study shows that the stress-stretch curve of TPUs changes with the number of applied cycles when cyclically loaded up to the same value of maximum stretch, but eventually reaches a steady state. A suitable methodology based on fracture mechanics approach is proposed to evaluate the cyclic fatigue resistance in TPUs, with additional treatments to account for the higher tendency to creep of TPUs compared to thermoset rubbers. Comparing the results with classical filled rubbers, TPUs demonstrate excellent toughness and cyclic fatigue resistance, suggesting new opportunities for applications requiring resistance to crack propagation under cyclic loading at large strains.
