PEBP balances apoptosis and autophagy in whitefly upon arbovirus infection

Shifan Wang et al.

Summary: Apoptosis and autophagy are two common forms of programmed cell death used by host organisms to fight against virus infection. In this study, researchers found that the coat protein (CP) of an insect-borne plant virus TYLCV interacts with a phosphatidylethanolamine-binding protein (PEBP) in its vector whitefly, leading to the activation of apoptosis and autophagy in the whitefly, affecting viral load. The results suggest that the viral load is predominantly determined by autophagy rather than apoptosis.

Rice black-streaked dwarf virus P10 promotes phosphorylation of GAPDH (glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase) to induce autophagy in Laodelphax striatellus

Qi Wang et al.

Summary: The main capsid protein of rice black-streaked dwarf virus (RBSDV), P10, interacts with GAPDH to induce autophagy in Laodelphax striatellus. This study elucidates the molecular mechanism by which RBSDV induces autophagy through the AMPK-GAPDH pathway.

Interaction between endogenous microRNAs and virus-derived small RNAs controls viral replication in insect vectors

Wan Zhao et al.

Summary: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play a crucial role in insects' resistance to virus infection, and viruses employ virus-derived small RNAs (vsRNAs) to regulate the expression of endogenous miRNAs. This study investigated the regulatory mechanisms of rice stripe virus (RSV) on miR-263a expression in the insect vector small brown planthopper. The results showed that RSV downregulated miR-263a by promoting the inhibitory effect of the transcription factor YY1 and by a vsRNA directly targeting the miR-263a promoter region. Reduced miR-263a levels suppressed RSV replication, benefiting the maintenance of a tolerable RSV accumulation level in insect vectors. This dual regulation mechanism demonstrates an ingenious adaptation strategy of viruses to their insect vectors.

A balance between vector survival and virus transmission is achieved through JAK/STAT signaling inhibition by a plant virus

Yu-Meng Wang et al.

Summary: Viruses and insect vectors have a competitive relationship in their adaptation to each other, and the JAK/STAT pathway plays an important role in the interaction between the begomovirus TYLCV and whiteflies. TYLCV has evolved strategies to impair the whitefly JAK/STAT pathway, while whiteflies enhance this pathway to defend against viral infection.

C-type lectin 5, a novel pattern recognition receptor for the JAK/STAT signaling pathway in Bombyx mori

Tao Geng et al.

Summary: The expression pattern and function of Bombyx mori C-type lectin 5 (BmCTL 5) was found to have a synergy relevance with the JAK/STAT signaling pathway against Beauveria bassiana. Knock-down of BmCTL 5 suppressed the JAK/STAT signaling pathway and the nodule melanization cascade, indicating its potential role as an important PRR. This study sheds light on the immune mechanism of the JAK/STAT signaling pathway in insects and aids in understanding the mechanism of the JAK/STAT signaling pathway in mammals.
