Transcriptional Regulation of hmsB, A Temperature-Dependent Small RNA, by RovM in Yersinia pestis Biovar Microtus

Lei Liu et al.

Summary: It was found in this study that the global regulator RovM could activate the expression of the hmsB gene, promoting biofilm formation in Yersinia pestis. However, RovM did not bind directly to the upstream DNA region of hmsB, suggesting an indirect regulatory mechanism. These results contribute to the understanding of regulatory circuits controlling gene expression in Y. pestis.

Abolishment of morphology-based taxa and change to binomial species names: 2022 taxonomy update of the ICTV bacterial viruses subcommittee

Dann Turner et al.

Summary: This article summarizes the activities of the Bacterial Viruses Subcommittee of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses from March 2021 to March 2022. It provides an overview of the new classifications proposed in 2021, approved by the Executive Committee, and ratified by vote in 2022. The taxonomy of bacterial viruses underwent significant changes, including the abolition of the paraphyletic morphological families Podoviridae, Siphoviridae, and Myoviridae, as well as the order Caudovirales, and the establishment of a binomial nomenclature system for species. Additionally, one order, 22 families, 30 subfamilies, 321 genera, and 862 species were newly created, promoted, or moved.

Yersinia pestis: the Natural History of Plague

R. Barbieri et al.

Summary: Plague can be transmitted through different routes, including fecal-oral, respiratory, and ingestion routes. Control of plague infection relies on early diagnosis, antibiotic treatment, and isolation measures. The disease has existed for at least 5,000 years, with well-established monitoring and prevention measures in Eurasia.

Black box of phage-bacterium interactions: exploring alternative phage infection strategies

Sari Mantynen et al.

Summary: This review discusses the extent, causes, and consequences of alternative phage lifestyles, proposing distinct definitions for terms like 'pseudolysogeny' and 'productive or non-productive chronic infection'. It also highlights the potential of phages to change their infection modes in response to environmental conditions or host cell physiology, and outlines known molecular mechanisms underlying these interactions.
