A decade of stability for wMel Wolbachia in natural Aedes aegypti populations

Perran P. Ross et al.

Summary: The study assesses the long-term stability of Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes in population replacement interventions. It finds that the effects of wMel on mosquitoes have remained unchanged and its genome has remained stable for up to a decade since the first release. wMel continues to block virus transmission and remains at high levels in mosquitoes. These findings indicate that Wolbachia population replacement releases will provide ongoing protection against arbovirus transmission.

Genetic stability of Aedes aegypti populations following invasion by wMel Wolbachia

Meng-Jia Lau et al.

Summary: The study found that the genomes of Aedes aegypti populations in the Cairns region of Australia remained stable after Wolbachia wMel release, with signs of selection associated with Wolbachia in specific genes. Despite this, populations of Aedes aegypti remained geographically distinct after Wolbachia wMel releases, indicating potential evolutionary impacts in the future.

UniProt: the universal protein knowledgebase in 2021

Alex Bateman et al.

Summary: The UniProt Knowledgebase aims to provide users with a comprehensive, high-quality set of protein sequences annotated with functional information. Updates over the past two years have increased the number of sequences to approximately 190 million, with new methods to assess proteome completeness and quality. UniProtKB has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by expertly curating relevant entries and making them rapidly available through a dedicated portal.

Using Wolbachia to Eliminate Dengue: Will the Virus Fight Back?

Kathryn M. Edenborough et al.

Summary: The introduction of Wolbachia strains into Aedes aegypti mosquito populations has been shown to significantly reduce dengue incidence, although RNA viruses are known to adapt to antiviral pressures. Long-term surveillance for resistant viruses should be an essential component of Wolbachia-introgression biocontrol programs.

Variation in Immune-Related Gene Expression Provides Evidence of Local Adaptation in Porites astreoides (Lamarck, 1816) between Inshore and Offshore Meta-Populations Inhabiting the Lower Florida Reef Tract, USA

Joshua A. Haslun et al.

Summary: The coral communities of the Florida Reef Tract have undergone dramatic changes in the past 30 years, with coral cover unevenly distributed. Differential responses to bacterial challenges between inshore and offshore coral populations may be related to differences in immune system activation.
