Temporal changes in pathogen diversity in a perennial plant-pathogen-hyperparasite system

Lea Stauber et al.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic diversity of the chestnut blight pathogen C. parasitica in the presence of its hyperparasite CHV1. The results showed that both pathogen population structure and CHV1 prevalence remained stable over time, suggesting recent bottlenecks influenced the population structure. The virus infection rates remained stable and had no significant impact on fungal population diversity.

Y recombination arrest and degeneration in the absence of sexual dimorphism

Thomas Lenormand et al.

Summary: The current theory suggests that degenerated sex chromosomes, such as the mammalian Y chromosome, evolve through three steps: recombination arrest, Y degeneration, and dosage compensation. Our study shows that early emergence of dosage compensation helps maintain Y-linked inversions, while the degeneration of these inversions is caused by regulatory divergence between the X and Y chromosomes. Contrary to current theory, this process occurs without selective pressure related to sexual dimorphism.

Tempo of Degeneration Across Independently Evolved Nonrecombining Regions

Fantin Carpentier et al.

Summary: Recombination is beneficial in the long term, but local recombination suppression can lead to genomic degeneration, especially on sex chromosomes. This study investigates the rate of degeneration in nonrecombining regions using mating-type chromosomes of fungi. The results show a decrease in the frequency of optimal codons in nonrecombining regions and a constant strength of purifying selection.

Genomic architecture of supergenes: connecting form and function

Emma L. Berdan et al.

Summary: This article introduces the concept of supergenes and the limited understanding of their evolution. The genetic architecture of supergenes plays a crucial role in their evolutionary fate, and recent advances in sequencing technology and computer simulations offer new opportunities for studying supergenes. The theme issue brings together various theoretical and empirical studies, highlighting the architectural diversity of supergenes and their connection to critical evolutionary processes.

Sheltering of deleterious mutations explains the stepwise extension of recombination suppression on sex chromosomes and other supergenes

Paul Jay et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates through mathematical modeling and stochastic simulation that recombination suppression on sex chromosomes and supergenes can expand due to the protection of recessive deleterious mutations, rather than antagonistic selection between sexes. This provides an alternative explanation for the observed evolutionary strata.

Recombination suppression and evolutionary strata around mating-type loci in fungi: documenting patterns and understanding evolutionary and mechanistic causes

Fanny E. Hartmann et al.

Summary: Genomic regions determining sexual compatibility often display recombination suppression, which can extend beyond the genes determining sexes or mating types, maintaining the multiallelic combinations required for correct compatibility determination. Recent evidence shows expansions of recombination suppression beyond mating-type genes in fungi, which have been little studied and may be more pervasive than commonly thought. The study of recombination suppression in fungi could contribute to our understanding of recombination suppression expansion across a broader range of organisms.

Size Variation of the Nonrecombining Region on the Mating-Type Chromosomes in the Fungal Podospora anserina Species Complex

Fanny E. Hartmann et al.

Summary: The study reveals the presence of nonrecombining regions around the mating-type locus in the fungus Podospora anserina and related species, leading to occasional recombination due to the labile and polymorphic nature of these regions. The size and location of the nonrecombining region vary between strains and species, resulting in differences in heterozygosity levels. Low levels of heterozygosity suggest low but nonnull outcrossing rates in nature for these pseudohomothallic fungi, contributing to our understanding of mating-type chromosome evolution and mating systems.
