Evoked and Event-Related Potentials as Biomarkers of Consciousness State and Recovery

Estelle Pruvost-Robieux et al.

Summary: The definition of consciousness has been a subject of interest for many scientists and philosophers. This study reviews different theoretical models supporting neural correlates of consciousness to better understand how evoked potentials can be identified as biomarkers of consciousness and recovery. A multimodal approach is suggested to improve the prediction of clinical outcomes in patients with consciousness disorders. Evoked potentials are found to be a cost-effective and easy-to-implement bedside examination technique with an important role in prognostic evaluation.

Electrophysiological Mapping During Brain Tumor Surgery: Recording Cortical Potentials Evoked Locally, Subcortically and Remotely by Electrical Stimulation to Assess the Brain Connectivity On-line

Anthony Boyer et al.

Summary: This study utilized direct electrical stimulation (DES) for functional brain mapping, combined with measurement of evoked potentials (EP), to explore its application in awake surgery and epileptic patients. The experiments demonstrated three different types of EP triggered by low-intensity DES in different brain regions, and proposed various activation and electrophysiological propagation mechanisms, paving the way for real-time mapping of connectivity between DES and recording sites, characterizing local electrophysiological states, and linking electrophysiology with function.

The development of an implantable deep brain stimulation device with simultaneous chronic electrophysiological recording and stimulation in humans

Abhinav Goyal et al.

Summary: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is commonly used to treat neurological disorders, but there is a need for a fully-implantable DBS system that can chronically record patient-specific electrophysiological biomarkers to improve therapeutic benefit. The Percept PC is the first FDA-approved device capable of simultaneous recordings and stimulation, with potential applications beyond DBS in understanding normal and abnormal neurophysiology.

A Unifying Review of Deep and Shallow Anomaly Detection

Lukas Ruff et al.

Summary: Deep learning approaches have significantly enhanced anomaly detection performance on complex data sets, sparking a renewed interest in the field. Various new methods have been introduced, including those based on generative models, one-class classification, and reconstruction. It is crucial to bring these methods together and explore the underlying principles and connections between classic and novel approaches for future research and development in anomaly detection.

Effects of propofol on cortico-cortical evoked potentials in the dorsal language white matter pathway

Yukihiro Yamao et al.

Summary: The study found that under general anesthesia, the distribution of CCEP response sites was minimally affected, while the N1 amplitude showed a tendency to increase. This indicates that the CCEP method provides effective intraoperative monitoring even under general anesthesia.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the feasibility of using full bandwidth chronic intracranial EEG data for ANT PIB-based seizure detection. The results showed that the best detector had a 7-Hz center frequency, 5-Hz band width, and 10-second epoch duration, demonstrating high sensitivity and low false alarm rates for some patients.

Summary: This work introduces a new approach to study brain dynamics by observing the temporal response shapes around stimulation sites to determine characteristic spatiotemporal structure. The technique allows for the interpretation of single-pulse brain stimulation data and can be used to explore the diverse interactions that make up the connectome.

A canonical visualization tool for SEEG electrodes

Harvey Huang et al.

Summary: SEEG electrodes are implanted in patients with refractory epilepsy to locate seizure foci, and are used in neurophysiology research to determine focal brain activity. Clear visualization of SEEG electrode location on MRI scans is crucial for neuroscientific understanding. An open-source software tool has been developed for visualizing SEEG electrode positions in relation to brain anatomy.
