Population genomic analysis of Aegilops tauschii identifies targets for bread wheat improvement

Kumar Gaurav et al.

Summary: The study sequenced 242 accessions of Aegilops tauschii and identified a rare lineage contributing to the wheat D subgenome. Through association mapping, genomic regions with candidate genes for disease and pest resistance were identified and successfully transferred into wheat. Exploiting the genomic diversity of the wild progenitor allows for rapid trait discovery and functional genetic validation.

Effect of a newly synthesized compound on delaying pre-harvest sprouting in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Shunyan Cui et al.

Summary: A new compound similar to methyl jasmonate was synthesized and tested for its ability to inhibit pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) in wheat. Exogenously applied compound effectively reduced alpha-amylase activity, delayed PHS, and preserved the vigor of wheat seeds. These findings may contribute to the development of a PHS preventative retardant.

Artificial selection in breeding extensively enriched a functional allelic variation inTaPHS1for pre-harvest sprouting resistance in wheat

Shubing Liu et al.

Summary: A novel allelic variation associated with reduced seed dormancy and pre-harvest sprouting susceptibility in wheat was identified. This variation, along with previously reported functional sequence variations, co-regulated TaPHS1 expression levels and pre-harvest sprouting resistance. The resistance haplotype identified can be used in marker-assisted selection to transfer TaPHS1 to new wheat cultivars.

Summary: This article comprehensively reviews the causes and consequences of PHS, the indicators and methods for PHS assessment, as well as the biological significance of PHS in crop production. Additionally, wheat quantitative trait loci controlling PHS are summarized comprehensively, and Arabidopsis is used as a model plant to develop a more complete PHS regulatory network for wheat. The integration of this information is conducive to the development of custom-made cultivated lines suitable for different demands and regions, and is of great significance for improving crop yields and economic benefits.

Optical maps refine the bread wheat Triticum aestivum cv. Chinese Spring genome assembly

Tingting Zhu et al.

Summary: This research successfully refined the genome sequence of bread wheat cv. Chinese Spring (CS), improving the v1.0 assembly by filling gaps and correcting the positions and orientations of some scaffolds. With increased contiguity, the numbers of transposable elements and intact TEs have increased, along with the high-confidence gene models mapped onto the new assembly. The reconciled assembly enhances the utility of the sequence for genetic mapping, comparative genomics, and studies on the biology of wheat.

Investigating conditions that induce late maturity alpha-amylase (LMA) using Northwestern US spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

Chang Liu et al.

Summary: The wheat industry rejects grains with high levels of alpha-amylase to avoid poor endproduct quality, caused mainly by preharvest sprouting and late maturity alpha-amylase induced by cool temperature shocks. Variability in LMA induction response to temperature changes was observed in different wheat cultivars, indicating the need for visual inspection during the soft dough stage of grain development to identify LMA-sensitive spikes.
