Molecular Design of Covalent Triazine Frameworks with Anisotropic Charge Migration for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Zhi-An Lan et al.

Summary: Covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) have the potential to be efficient photocatalysts for hydrogen production using visible light. However, the uniform distribution of donor-acceptor motifs in the CTFs leads to isotropic charge separation and transfer. In this study, thiophene (Th) or benzothiadiazole (BT) units were incorporated into the molecular structure of CTF-based photocatalysts to achieve anisotropic charge carrier separation and migration. The optimized polymer exhibited significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity for hydrogen production under visible light, providing a useful approach for designing conjugated polymer photocatalysts for solar energy conversion.

Scope and prospect of transition metal-based cocatalysts for visible light-driven photocatalytic hydrogen evolution with graphitic carbon nitride

Ajit Kumar Singh et al.

Summary: Photocatalytic production of H-2 using sunlight is a sustainable solution to meet global energy demand and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Development of efficient semiconductor-based photocatalysts is crucial for commercial viability. Metal-free polymeric graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) offers excellent long-term stability, but has poor electronic conductivity. Transition metal-based cocatalysts can improve charge separation and transport. The role of non-noble metal-based cocatalysts in charge separation and H+ reduction activity is reviewed. This paper focuses on the design principles of transition metal-based cocatalysts, their combination with g-CN, and the mechanisms of electron-hole separation, charge transport, and recombination.

A Review on MXene Synthesis, Stability, and Photocatalytic Applications

G. Murali et al.

Summary: Photocatalytic water splitting, CO2 reduction, and pollutant degradation are promising strategies for addressing environmental and energy crises. The use of expensive noble-metal cocatalysts is necessary to enhance photocatalytic performance, but the development of efficient, inexpensive, and noble-metal-free cocatalysts is desirable. MXenes have shown great potential as alternatives to noble-metal cocatalysts, with their 2D morphology, metallic electrical conductivity, hydrophilic surface, and high specific surface area. This review focuses on the synthesis, stability, and application of MXenes-based photocatalysts for H2 evolution, CO2 reduction, and pollutant degradation, and discusses the challenges and future directions for enhancing their photocatalytic performance.

S-Scheme 2D/2D Bi2MoO6/BiOI van der Waals heterojunction for CO2 photoreduction

Zhongliao Wang et al.

Summary: Reducing CO2 to hydrocarbon fuels through solar irradiation is a promising approach for mitigating CO2 emissions and resource depletion. However, the catalytic performance is hindered by severe charge recombination and high energy barrier. In this study, a 2D/2D Bi2MoO6/BiOI composite was fabricated to enhance CO2 photoreduction efficiency. The composite showed efficient charge transfer, strong redox capability, and effective charge separation. The intermediates of CO2 photoreduction were identified, and the rate-determining step for CH4 and CO production was determined to be CO2 hydrogenation. Introduction of Bi2MoO6 decreased the energy barrier for CO2 photoreduction on BiOI. The study highlights the synergistic effect of the S-scheme heterojunction and van der Waals heterojunction in the 2D/2D composite.
