Clock genes and environmental cues coordinate Anopheles pheromone synthesis, swarming, and mating

Guandong Wang et al.

Summary: The swarming and mating behavior of Anopheles mosquitoes is regulated by clock genes, light, and temperature. The up-regulation of clock genes period and timeless affects mating behavior, while the desaturase gene desat1 plays a role in regulating the production of cuticular hydrocarbons that stimulate mating activity. Light and temperature may also influence mosquito mating behavior through modulating gene expression.

Rectal bacteria produce sex pheromones in the male oriental fruit fly

Lu Ren et al.

Summary: Microbiota plays a key role in chemical communication and direct production of sex pheromones in insects. Antibiotic feeding reduces levels of Bacilli, TMP, and TTMP in the male rectum. Bacillus species isolated from the male rectum can produce TMP and TTMP with glucose and threonine as substrates.

Drosophila sensory receptors-a set of molecular Swiss Army Knives

Craig Montell

Summary: Genetic studies in the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, have revealed the multifunctionality of sensory receptors in different senses, influencing research directions in various animal models. The discovery of versatile sensory receptors in flies has provided valuable insights into sensory biology and its applications in other species.
