Chalcopyrite bioleaching in chloride media: A mini-review

Flavio Luiz Martins et al.

Summary: The increasing demand for copper worldwide has led to the need for processing larger amounts of copper ores. However, the refractory nature of chalcopyrite, the most abundant copper mineral, hinders efficient hydrometallurgical processes. Researchers have suggested using high temperatures and reagents such as sodium chloride to overcome this refractoriness. Bioleaching has been proposed as an economic and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional chemical processes. However, the tolerance of acidophilic microorganisms used in bioleaching to high chloride concentrations remains a challenge.
