Wind tunnel tests on railway vehicles in the presence of windbreaks: Influence of flow and geometric parameters on aerodynamic coefficients

E. Brambilla et al.

Summary: Research conducted through wind tunnel tests found that the dimensions and configuration of windbreak barriers can affect the aerodynamic coefficients of trains in crosswinds. Special attention should be paid to the splitter plate dimensions, as a limited upwind width can underestimate aerodynamic coefficients, while barriers with too short lengths may overestimate coefficients.

Effects of embankment layouts on train aerodynamics in a wind tunnel configuration

Wenhui Li et al.

Summary: The study focused on crosswind stability of trains running on an embankment, using different embankment layouts in wind tunnel simulations. Results showed that aerodynamic coefficients of leading vehicles on the leeward track decreased rapidly with the extending length of the upstream embankment. Certain scenarios underestimated aerodynamic coefficients compared to more realistic scenarios, indicating the importance of considering finite-length embankments in wind tunnel tests for determining running safety.

Research on the reasonable end shape of the windbreak wall model in the wind tunnel test via numerical simulation

Zhiwei Jiang et al.

Summary: The study used the improved delayed detached-eddy simulation (IDDES) method to investigate the impact of windbreak wall end shape on the aerodynamic characteristics of high-speed trains. Different end shapes of windbreak walls mainly affect the flow field between the front end of the windbreak wall and the nose of the head car, but their influence on the aerodynamic load and surface pressure distribution of the train is localized. The length of the windbreak wall is a crucial factor affecting the accuracy of wind tunnel tests.

Aerodynamic characteristics of a high-speed train exposed to heavy rain environment based on non-spherical raindrop

Mengge Yu et al.

Summary: The paper discusses the aerodynamic characteristics of high-speed trains in dry conditions and rainy environments, as well as the effects of raindrops on these characteristics. The study finds that in heavy rain conditions, the aerodynamic coefficients of high-speed trains increase approximately linearly with rainfall intensity.

Experimental and simulation research on the aerodynamic effect on a train with a wind barrier in different lengths

Houyu Gu et al.

Summary: The length of the wind barrier has a significant influence on the aerodynamic characteristics of the head car, with lift force decreasing, lateral force increasing, and drag force approaching 0 as the barrier length increases. The lateral and drag forces of the head car remain relatively stable after a certain barrier length at specific yaw angles.

Influence of porosity of reformed earth embankment windbreak wall on flow field and displacement of catenary under crosswinds

Xiao Dong et al.

Summary: This study used CFD to simulate the flow fields around five REEWWs with different porosities, and analyzed wind-induced displacement of the catenary using FEM. The results showed that a windbreak with 37.5% porosity significantly reduced wind speed and catenary displacement, improving protection performance.

Full-scale tests of unsteady aerodynamic loads and pressure distribution on fast trains in crosswinds

Hongrui Gao et al.

Summary: This study conducted full-scale tests to investigate the influence of crosswinds on the aerodynamic loads of a fast streamlined train. The results showed that the mean values of aerodynamic load coefficients increased and then decreased with the yaw angle, reaching maximum values between 54.5 degrees and 59.6 degrees. The coefficients of variation of the aerodynamic load coefficients were approximately twice the turbulence intensity, indicating that the fluctuations were caused by wind speed oscillations. The dominant frequencies of the aerodynamic load coefficients were found to be at Strouhal numbers of 0-0.4.

A numerical study of aerodynamic characteristics of a high-speed train with different rail models under crosswind

Zhiwei Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the aerodynamic performance and flow characteristics of a train under different rail models using the CFD numerical simulation method. The presence of a rail model significantly impacted the aerodynamic performance of the train, with larger yaw angles resulting in more significant differences in aerodynamic coefficients.
