Potential impact and phenology of the biological control agent, Hypena opulenta on Vincetoxicum nigrum in Michigan

Summary: Pre-release studies suggest that the defoliating moth, Hypena opulenta, may help reduce biomass, survival, and seed production of invasive swallow-wort vines. However, field observations in Canada five years after release show higher defoliation rates and larval densities than laboratory studies. Experimental releases in Michigan were conducted to study the effects of H. opulenta feeding on black swallow-wort at more realistic densities. Results show that larval densities and damage increase with release size, but plant survival and fecundity are not affected.

Assessment of pupal mortality in Hypena opulenta: An obstacle for establishment of a classical biological control agent against invasive swallow-worts

Summary: Common obstacles for establishment of newly-introduced biological control agents include climate and the activity of native antagonists. This study conducted field experiments to investigate mortality factors for the pupae of a biological control agent for invasive swallow-worts. The results showed that predation rates were relatively low in containers with large holes during winter, but non-predation mortality in closed containers was high. During summer, predation rates in containers with large holes were higher than during winter, increasing as the summer progressed.

Response of black swallowwort (Vincetoxicum nigrum) to herbicides plus mowing

Summary: The invasive vine black swallowwort is difficult to control, and there is a lack of herbicide studies on its management. This study found that glyphosate formulations were effective in reducing aboveground biomass of black swallowwort, although they had less impact on cover and stem densities. Mowing did not consistently enhance the efficacy of glyphosate applications. Triclopyr was generally ineffective against black swallowwort in this study.
