Optimisation of operating conditions during coagulation-flocculation process in industrial wastewater treatment using Hylocereus undatus foliage through response surface methodology

Ayub Md Som et al.

Summary: The application of plant-based coagulants in industrial wastewater treatment has gained attention due to their potential advantages. This study focused on Hylocereus undatus foliage as a plant-based coagulant and aimed to evaluate its performance in treating different types of wastewater under different operating conditions using optimization techniques. The results showed that the optimum conditions for paint wastewater treatment were achieved at pH 5, a coagulant dosage of 300 mg/L, rapid mixing speed of 120 rpm, and temperature of 30 degrees C. The removal efficiencies of turbidity, COD, and SS were found to be 62.81%, 59.57%, and 57.23%, respectively.

Application of a combined response surface methodology (RSM)-artificial neural network (ANN) for multiple target optimization and prediction in a magnetic coagulation process for secondary effluent from municipal wastewater treatment plants

Kemei Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, an enhanced coagulation-flocculant process incorporating magnetic powder was used to further treat the secondary effluent of domestic wastewater. The combination of response surface methodology and an artificial neural network (RSM-ANN) was used to optimize and predict pollutant removal and turbidity. The results demonstrated that the magnetic coagulation process improved the water quality and the RSM-ANN approach showed potential for application in wastewater treatment plants.

Utilization of leather fibrous wastes for the production of reconstituted fibric materials: heavy metal determination and removal

Rethinam Senthil et al.

Summary: Incomprehension about heavy metal containing finished solid leather wastes results in environmental pollution. This study isolated leather microfibres (LMF) from these wastes and successfully removed heavy metals through metal reduction process. The resulting reconstituted fibric materials (RFM) are recyclable, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective.

Chemically enhanced primary treatment of municipal wastewater with ferrate(VI)

Lei Zheng et al.

Summary: Chemically enhanced primary treatment (CEPT) with ferrate(VI) was found to be effective in removing TSS, total COD, and total P from municipal wastewater by forming large-sized aggregates and facilitating sedimentation. Ferrate(VI) also demonstrated substantial removal of recalcitrant dissolved organic phosphorus and inactivation of bacterial indicators during the treatment process. Higher ferrate(VI) dose and weakly alkaline pH conditions were found to be favorable for the performance of ferrate(VI)-based CEPT.

Treatment of cardboard factory wastewater using ozone-assisted electrocoagulation process: optimization through response surface methodology

Mohammad Mehralian et al.

Summary: The study found that the ozone-assisted electrocoagulation process is effective in treating COD and color in cardboard factory wastewater, with better results compared to using ozonation or electrocoagulation separately. The optimal conditions were current density 9.6 mA/cm², time 20 minutes, and pH 12. COD removal followed pseudo-first-order kinetics with a reaction rate constant of 0.073 1/min.

Foam fractionation for the separation of SDBS from its aqueous solution: Process optimization and property test

Wei Liu et al.

Summary: Foam fractionation was used to investigate the recovery efficiency and physicochemical properties of SDBS. Optimal operating conditions were determined through multiple experiments, showing an enrichment ratio of 134.83 +/- 6.74 and a recovery percentage of 63.43 +/- 3.17%. The results suggested that multiple foam fractionation operations induced structural transitions and irreversible aggregation of SDBS molecules.

Enhanced primary treatment during wet weather flow using ferrate as a coagulant, coagulant aid and disinfectant

Abdul Rahim Al Umairi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the dual-function of ferrate as a coagulant and disinfectant for chemically-enhanced primary treatment during wet weather flow (WWF). Linear models were developed to predict the removals of turbidity, TSS, COD, and ortho-phosphate. Ferrate showed better removal of TSS as a coagulant aid added with alum, and exhibited more effective disinfection capacity when used as a coagulant aid and as a disinfectant compared to when used solely as a coagulant.

Enhancing Demulsification Performance for Oil-Water Separation through Encapsulating Ionic Liquids in the Pore of MIL-100(Fe)

Rui Wang et al.

Summary: The encapsulation of ionic liquid cations (Amim(+)) in MIL-100(Fe) micropores enhanced the positive charge density of the framework, significantly improving the demulsification performance for oil-in-water emulsions. The efficiency of Amim@MIL-100(Fe)-3:3 reached 94% within 30 seconds, showcasing a substantial enhancement compared to MIL-100(Fe) within 30 minutes. This performance improvement was attributed to the increased electrostatic attraction facilitated by the presence of Amim(+).

Removal of refractory organics in wastewater by coagulation/flocculation with green chlorine-free coagulants

Huihui Zhang et al.

Summary: Coagulation/flocculation with the green chlorine-free coagulant PSAF showed high removal efficiencies for organic substances in non-oily wastewater and oily wastewater, with the addition sequence of PAMALAM significantly impacting the coagulation performance. The mechanisms of charge neutralization, sweep, and adsorption/entrapment were identified during the coagulation process, with PAMALAM mainly enhancing adsorption, bridging, and sweep functions.

Ferrate self-decomposition in water is also a self-activation process: Role of Fe(V) species and enhancement with Fe(III) in methyl phenyl sulfoxide oxidation by excess ferrate

Zhuang-Song Huang et al.

Summary: This study elucidated the crucial role of ferrate self-decomposition in oxidation reactions and developed a mechanistic kinetics model to understand the involvement of Fe(V), Fe(VI), and Fe(IV) species in the oxidation of PMSO. Results showed that the Fe(V) species derived from ferrate self-decomposition contributed significantly to PMSO oxidation, while the oxidation pathways of Fe(VI) and Fe(V) were influenced by different factors. The findings suggest the general role of Fe(V) and the potential enhancement by Fe(III) during ferrate oxidation of micropollutants.
