Mapping Floods in Urban Areas From Dual-Polarization InSAR Coherence Data

Ramona Pelich et al.

Summary: This study utilizes both co- and cross-polarization images to enhance the mapping of urban floodwater by detecting significant decreases in multitemporal InSAR coherence. It is suggested that both double-bounce scattering and multiple-bounce may occur in urban areas, impacting the effectiveness and accuracy of the approach. The proposed methodology demonstrates an increase in the accuracy of urban flood maps by utilizing dual polarization information, particularly with the use of Sentinel-1 mission data.

A global urban microwave backscatter time series data set for 1993-2020 using ERS, QuikSCAT, and ASCAT data

Steve Frolking et al.

Summary: This study developed a multi-sensor, multi-decadal data set of global urban microwave backscatter to quantify rates of upward urban growth. The research found a strong linear correlation between ASCAT urban backscatter and a gridded product of building volume, providing a time series for studying global urban change.

Urbanization and Floods in Sub-Saharan Africa: Spatiotemporal Study and Analysis of Vulnerability Factors-Case of Antananarivo Agglomeration (Madagascar)

Fenosoa Nantenaina Ramiaramanana et al.

Summary: Flooding is a major threat to cities in Sub-Saharan Africa due to demographic changes and urbanization, leading to construction in flood-prone areas without adequate infrastructure. Spatiotemporal analysis of Antananarivo in Madagascar shows that urbanization has increased exposure to floods, with a significant population living in flood-prone zones. Better integration of flood risk management in spatial planning policies is crucial for sustainable development and protection of vulnerable populations.

Floodwater detection in urban areas using Sentinel-1 and WorldDEM data

David C. Mason et al.

Summary: Using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) remote sensing technology, it is possible to detect urban flooding in high resolution by analyzing SAR backscatter to identify flooded areas. The method has shown promising results in detecting urban flooding during flood events in the UK, achieving high detection accuracy in moderate density housing areas. This approach has the potential for real-time global operational use in detecting urban flooding incidents.

An Urban Flooding Index for Unsupervised Inundated Urban Area Detection Using Sentinel-1 Polarimetric SAR Images

Hui Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of urban flooding on radar return changes under different polarizations and proposed a new method for unsupervised inundated urban area detection using PolSAR and high-resolution optical images. The defined Urban Flooding Index (UFI) in VV polarization achieved higher detection accuracy. VV polarization outperformed VH polarization in all methods, especially in the UFI-based method, improving detection accuracy by 38.16%.

On the Value of Sentinel-1 InSAR Coherence Time-Series for Vegetation Classification

Tina Nikaein et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the added value of using short-temporal baseline coherences in complex agricultural areas in Sao Paulo, Brazil, cultivated with heterogeneous annual crops, grasses, and sugarcane. Utilizing the Sentinel-1 radar imagery, the research also explores the sensitivity of radar information to classification methods, data preparation, and sampling practices. The results show that combining coherence with backscatter intensity and using both co-polarized and cross-polarized information can significantly improve classification accuracy in winter, with added sensitivity to harvest events.
