A Review of Estimation Methods for Aboveground Biomass in Grasslands Using UAV

Clara Oliva Goncalves Bazzo et al.

Summary: Grasslands cover 30% of total terrestrial biomass and accurate estimation of aboveground biomass (AGB) is crucial for managing ecosystem sustainability. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have emerged as a useful tool for estimating AGB in grasslands. This review summarizes recent research on UAV-based AGB estimation in grasslands and highlights the need for more diverse study locations and long-term studies to improve transferability and understanding of the methods.

Applicability of different vegetation indices for pasture biomass estimation in the north-central region of Mongolia

Batbileg Bayaraa et al.

Summary: In this study, linear regression models between above-ground pasture biomass and seven vegetation indices were used, with the atmospherically resistant vegetation index (ARVI) showing the highest fit with above-ground biomass in the specific landscape of Mongolia. It was concluded that ARVI is the most suitable candidate for estimating pasture biomass in a landscape similar to that widely found in north-central Mongolia, which will be applicable for pasture monitoring and natural resource studies in Mongolia.

Estimating the grassland aboveground biomass in the Three-River Headwater Region of China using machine learning and Bayesian model averaging

Na Zeng et al.

Summary: Accurate monitoring of spatiotemporal variation in grassland aboveground biomass (AGB) is important in the Three-River Headwater Region of China. A study used machine learning models to estimate AGB and found that the random forest (RF) model performed the best, with Bayesian model averaging improving AGB prediction. The spatial distribution of grassland AGB in the TRHR was heterogeneous, with interannual variation showing increasing trends modulated by regional water conditions.

Estimating Pasture Biomass Using Sentinel-2 Imagery and Machine Learning

Yun Chen et al.

Summary: This study successfully developed a sequential neural network model for estimating pasture biomass in five dairy farms in northern Tasmania, Australia, using high-resolution imagery and advanced machine learning techniques, resulting in a relatively high prediction accuracy. The research also revealed the impact of in situ measurements, pasture management, and grazing practices on the model's predictions on different farms.

An evaluation of Landsat, Sentinel-2, Sentinel-1 and MODIS data for crop type mapping

Summary: In this study, the utility of Landsat, Sentinel, and MODIS satellite data for mapping corn and soybean in the United States was evaluated. Results showed that individual satellite/sensor data could reach accuracies of 94.8-96.8%, while combining all data improved accuracy to 97.0%. Landsat was identified as most useful for soybean classification, Sentinel-2 for corn, and optical data were preferred over SAR data.

Biomass retrieval based on genetic algorithm feature selection and support vector regression in Alpine grassland using ground-based hyperspectral and Sentinel-1 SAR data

Eugenia Chiarito et al.

Summary: A general framework for the integration of multisensor data for dry and fresh biomass retrieval is proposed and tested in Alpine meadows and pastures. Hyperspectral spectroradiometer and biomass samples were collected in field campaigns, and a support vector regression model was used for data analysis.
