Bamboo Mapping Using Earth Observation Data: A Systematic Review

Muna Tamang et al.

Summary: Bamboo is recognized as one of the most productive renewable natural resources in the world, and its effective utilization can contribute to six sustainable development goals outlined by the United Nations. This paper systematically reviews the global literature on mapping bamboo resources using remote sensing techniques and identifies the predominant use of medium-resolution satellite images. Visual interpretation and maximum likelihood classifiers have been commonly employed, but there has been a growing emphasis on machine learning algorithms for more accurate bamboo mapping. The study also highlights the underrepresentation of bamboo-rich countries, except China, in the research on bamboo mapping.

Towards nationwide mapping of bamboo resources in the Philippines: testing the pixel-based and fractional cover approaches

Jan Joseph Dida et al.

Summary: The study successfully mapped bamboos in Iloilo province in the Philippines using Sentinel 1 and Sentinel 2 remote sensing images and their vegetation indices. The fractional cover method showed higher accuracy and lower error compared to the pixel-based method, especially in separating reflectance values among different vegetation types. The results suggest the fractional cover method is suitable for nationwide baselining of bamboo resources.

Monitoring the Severity of Pantana phyllostachysae Chao on Bamboo Using Leaf Hyperspectral Data

Xuying Huang et al.

Summary: This study used hyperspectral data to identify PPC damage on moso bamboo leaves, finding that damaged leaves showed clear declines in chlorophyll and nitrogen content with severity. The spectral changes of damaged leaves were noticeable, with increases in red and shortwave infrared bands and decreases in green and near-infrared bands. The constructed identification model achieved an overall accuracy of 81.51%, but including off-year leaves resulted in a 5% decrease in accuracy.
