Mechanical properties of extruded continuous glass fiber reinforced wood Particle/HDPE composites: Effects of glass bundle tex and arrangement

Majid Pourghayoumi et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of wood-plastic composites (WPCs) are reduced due to the use of wood particles, making their structural applications scarce. Embedding continuous fibers is considered the most effective method for increasing mechanical properties, although there are challenges in large-scale implementation. This study designed and implemented a modular die to embed continuous glass fibers into extruded WPC profiles, investigating the positioning of fiber rovings and evaluating the effect of fiber characteristics on the mechanical properties of WPCs. The results showed significant improvements in flexural strength for reinforced specimens compared to non-reinforced composites, with a non-catastrophic failure mode observed.

Investigation of the effect of nanoparticles on wood-bioplastic composite behavior using the acoustic emission method

Samira Karami et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the identification of failure mechanisms in wood-bioplastic nanocomposites using acoustic emission (AE) signal processing wavelet packet transform (WPT). The nanocomposites with different compositions were prepared and tested, and AE signals were collected and analyzed. The results reveal distinct types and percentages of failure mechanisms in various composites, and the method also examines the effect of nanoparticles on the matrix's tensile strength.

Determination of technological properties of wood plastic nanocomposites produced by flat press reinforced with nano MgO

Emre Birinci

Summary: Wood plastic nanocomposites (WPNC) reinforced with nano magnesium oxide (MgO) were produced using the dry blending method in a flat press. Technological properties of the produced WPNC panels were investigated, including density, water absorption, thickness swelling, tensile strength, bending strength, modulus of elasticity, surface roughness and Shore D hardness. The use of MAPP and nano MgO positively affected the water resistance and mechanical properties of WPNC panels. SEM micrographs showed that voids in WPNC panels were reduced with the increase of MAPP reinforcement and nano MgO ratio. Future studies are recommended to explore the biological resistance of nano MgO reinforced WPNCs due to its antibacterial, catalytic and photocatalytic properties.
