Differential Uptake and Translocation of Cadmium and Lead by Quinoa: A Multivariate Comparison of Physiological and Oxidative Stress Responses

Atif A. Bamagoos et al.

Summary: This study explored the tolerance and accumulation potential of quinoa under the combined stress of cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb). Quinoa plants exposed to higher concentrations of Cd and Pb showed a significant reduction in biomass and physiological attributes. The combined application of Cd and Pb caused oxidative stress but was alleviated by the overactivation of antioxidant enzymes. Quinoa demonstrated its ability to stabilize Cd and Pb in co-contaminated soils and limit their uptake.

Sulfur metabolism, organic acid accumulation and phytohormone regulation are crucial physiological processes modulating the different tolerance to Pb stress of two contrasting poplars

Wenguang Shi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the physiological processes modulating lead tolerance capacities in two contrasting poplar species. The results showed differences in lead tolerance capacities, nutrient concentrations, organic acid accumulation, and phytohormone regulation between Populus x canescens and Populus nigra. Sulfur metabolism, organic acid accumulation, and phytohormone regulation were identified as key physiological processes modulating the different lead tolerance capacities between the two poplar species.

Morphophysiological and phytochemical responses to cadmium and lead stress in coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.)

Bahman Fattahi et al.

Summary: The study found that cadmium and lead have adverse effects on the morphological and physiological traits of coriander plants, but positive effects on leaf phytochemical attributes. Therefore, it is recommended to cultivate coriander in heavy metal contaminated soils only for medicinal purposes.

Bioavailability and Ecotoxicity of Lead in Soil: Implications for Setting Ecological Soil Quality Standards

Koen Oorts et al.

Summary: The study derived ecological soil quality standards for lead based on long-term bioavailability and toxicity of lead to soil organisms. It was found that toxicity thresholds of lead vary significantly depending on soil conditions, and different standards should be set accordingly. Furthermore, the research suggests normalizing data for variation of effective cation exchange capacity among soils when setting ecological soil quality criteria for lead in different regulatory frameworks.
