Arctic warming-induced cold damage to East Asian terrestrial ecosystems

The persistent increasing winter temperatures in recent decades in the central Himalayas coincide with continental-scale warming. Winter warming in the central Himalayas may benefit alpine vegetation in humid regions by extending the growing season, as long as moisture availability is sufficient.

Sensitivity of recruitment and growth of alpine treeline birch to elevated temperature

Summary: Recent research on Changbai Mountain in northeastern China showed a significant increase in tree recruitment above the alpine treeline since 1985, likely due to warmer summer temperatures. Dendrochronology and open top chamber experiments revealed that tree recruitment and growth are highly sensitive to temperature fluctuations, with little influence from soil water content. These findings suggest that future climate warming will likely lead to increased tree recruitment and growth beyond the alpine treeline.
