Quantification and Simulation of Landscape Anthropization around the Mining Agglomerations of Southeastern Katanga (DR Congo) between 1979 and 2090

Heritier Khoji Muteya et al.

Summary: Mining activities in Southeastern Katanga have led to deforestation, ecosystem degradation, and unplanned urbanization. This study quantifies the impact of these activities on the landscape and predicts future trends. The results show a significant loss of natural cover in favor of agriculture and energy production, as well as built-up areas. The research highlights the urgent need for territorial development planning and alternatives to charcoal as an energy source to protect natural ecosystems.
