Somatic Embryogenesis of Pinus sylvestris L. from Parent Genotypes with High- and Low Stilbene Content in Their Heartwood

Anni Harju et al.

Summary: The increasing concern about ecological impacts of wood preservation chemicals has raised interest in the natural durability of Scots pine heartwood. Phenolic compounds-stilbenes-have been found to inhibit fungal growth, making heartwood more resistant to decay. There is a strong genetic component in the stilbene content of the heartwood in Scots pine, with a positive correlation between stilbene content in the heartwood of mother trees and their progenies. Vegetative propagation, i.e., somatic embryogenesis (SE) of Scots pine genotypes with high content of stilbenes could provide a way to produce more durable timber.

Reducing Pre- and Post-Treatments in Cryopreservation Protocol and Testing Storage at-80 °C for Norway Spruce Embryogenic Cultures

Saila A. Varis et al.

Summary: The study compared freezing and cryopreservation methods for storing Norway spruce embryogenic tissues, finding that cryopreservation using liquid nitrogen was more effective. Simplifying pre-treatment and thawing processes were also studied, with results indicating the importance of choosing the right cryoprotectant solution.

Root Rot Resistance Locus PaLAR3 Is Delivered by Somatic Embryogenesis (SE) Pipeline in Norway Spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.)

Jaanika Edesi et al.

Summary: The Norway spruce somatic embryogenesis technique is suitable for propagating materials with root rot resistance traits. The presence of the root rot resistance locus PaLAR3B does not interfere with somatic embryo production capacity. However, in some families, the PaLAR3B genotype may affect the viability of emblings.
