Assessment of impacts to the sequence of the tropical cyclone Nisarga and monsoon events in shoreline changes and vegetation damage in the coastal zone of Maharashtra, India

Manoranjan Mishra et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the impact of tropical cyclones and monsoon events on shoreline changes and vegetation degradation in Maharashtra coastal zone and Mumbai region, India. By using geospatial technology and statistical techniques, the study provides important insights for coastal managers to plan resilient coastal systems after the passage of tropical cyclones.

Contribution of the synergistic interaction between topography and climate variables to pine caterpillar (Dendrolimus spp.) outbreaks in Shandong Province, China

Yongbin Bao et al.

Summary: This study constructed an integrated index for assessing the susceptibility of forest ecosystems in Shandong Province, China to pine caterpillar outbreaks and used a geodetector model to analyze the effects of environmental factors on the risk of pine caterpillar outbreak. The results showed that mountain and hilly areas are more susceptible to pine caterpillar outbreaks, and the susceptibility of the study area has been increasing over time. Synergistic effects between certain topography and climate variables also enhance the susceptibility of the study area to pine caterpillar outbreaks.

Poleward and weakened westerlies during Pliocene warmth

Jordan T. Abell et al.

Summary: The prevailing mid-latitude westerly winds, known as the westerlies, are migrating polewards in response to anthropogenic forcing. Reconstructing the westerlies during past warm periods can help understand changes in the position and strength of these wind systems as the climate continues to warm.

Effects of meteorological factors on the defoliation dynamics of the larch caterpillar (Dendrolimus superans Butler) in the Great Xing'an boreal forests

Lei Fang et al.

Summary: This study found that climatic warming and drying will increase the risk of larch caterpillar outbreaks in the Great Xing'an Mountains, while warmer temperatures in growing seasons and overwintering periods can increase the defoliation area, and rainy and humid growing seasons decrease the defoliation area.

Impact Assessments of Typhoon Lekima on Forest Damages in Subtropical China Using Machine Learning Methods and Landsat 8 OLI Imagery

Xu Zhang et al.

Summary: This study detected and evaluated forest damage caused by Typhoon Lekima using machine learning algorithms and image classification methods, showing a large affected forest area and severe damage. The spatial distribution and severity of damage were influenced by geographical factors and forest types.

Vegetation structure drives forest phenological recovery after hurricane

Yuan Gong et al.

Summary: Hurricanes affect forests by reducing biomass and causing plant mortality. Research shows that hurricanes accelerate leaf senescence and shorten the growing season in affected forests. The recovery and response after a hurricane depend on forest structure and degree of damage, impacting the length of the growing season.

Trends in Outbreaks of Defoliating Insects Highlight Growing Threats for Central European Forests, and Implications for Eastern Baltic Region

Ingars Silins et al.

Summary: The study found a link between climate warming and the frequency of outbreaks of forest defoliating species. Throughout the analyzed period, there were fluctuations in the frequency and magnitude of outbreaks, indicating a potential increase in insect outbreak risk with warming in Central Europe.
