The global burden of metabolic disease: Data from 2000 to 2019

Nicholas W. S. Chew et al.

Summary: Global estimates from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019 reveal increasing prevalence rates for metabolic diseases, particularly in high socio-demographic index countries. While mortality rates have decreased for some metabolic diseases, such as hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, rates remain unchanged for type 2 diabetes mel-litus and obesity. The highest mortality rates are observed in the World Health Organization Eastern Mediterranean region and low to low-middle socio-demographic index countries.

Higher mortality in acute coronary syndrome patients without standard modifiable risk factors: Results from a global meta-analysis of 1,285,722 patients

Gwyneth Kong et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown an increasing proportion of SMuRF-less ACS patients. Despite lower body mass index and fewer comorbidities, SMuRF-less patients had increased in-hospital mortality and cardiogenic shock. However, despite worse outcomes, SMuRF-less patients were prescribed less guideline-directed medical therapies on discharge.

The global syndemic of metabolic diseases in the young adult population: A consortium of trends and projections from the Global Burden of Disease 2000-2019

Bryan Chong et al.

Summary: A study analyzed global trends and mortality rates of metabolic diseases in individuals aged below 40 using data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries and Risk Factors Study 2019. The highest death rates were observed in hypertension, obesity, hyperlipidemia, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Obesity had the highest disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), followed by hypertension, hyperlipidemia, T2DM, and NAFLD. Mortality rates decreased over time in hyperlipidemia, hypertension, NAFLD, and T2DM but increased in obesity. By 2050, obesity is projected to contribute to the largest number of deaths, followed by hypertension, hyperlipidemia, T2DM, and NAFLD.

A two-decade population-based study on the effect of hypertension in the general population with obesity in the United States

Gwyneth Kong et al.

Summary: This study examined the prognosis of the US general population with obesity based on hypertension control. It found that mortality rates were higher in individuals with uncontrolled or controlled hypertension compared to those without hypertension. This emphasizes the importance of optimizing hypertension control and promoting weight loss for better outcomes in obese individuals.

Hepatic steatosis and advanced hepatic fibrosis are independent predictors of long-term mortality in acute myocardial infarction

YipHan Chin et al.

Summary: This study examined the prevalence and prognosis of hepatic steatosis and fibrosis in patients with post-acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The results showed that both hepatic steatosis and fibrosis are common in AMI patients and are associated with mortality. Hepatic steatosis and fibrosis could help stratify the risk of AMI patients.

Trends and predictions of malnutrition and obesity in 204 countries and territories: an analysis of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Bryan Chong et al.

Summary: This study analyzed global trends and projections of disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and deaths from malnutrition and obesity. It found that malnutrition-related DALYs are decreasing while obesity-related DALYs are increasing. The highest burden of malnutrition is observed in Africa and low socio-demographic index (SDI) countries, while the highest burden of obesity is in the Eastern Mediterranean and middle SDI countries.

Comprehensive Management of Cardiovascular Risk Factors for Adults With Type 2 Diabetes: A Scientific Statement From the American Heart Association

Joshua J. Joseph et al.

Summary: This scientific statement highlights the importance of controlling cardiovascular risk factors in reducing cardiovascular events in patients with diabetes. It analyzes how newer antihyperglycemic agents, blood pressure control, and lipid-lowering therapies can improve glycemic control and prevent cardiovascular disease in diabetes. Additionally, it emphasizes the significance of lifestyle interventions, pharmacological therapy, and surgical interventions in managing obesity and metabolic syndrome, which are important precursors of diabetes and comorbid cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, it explores the critical role of social determinants of health and health equity in the continuum of care for diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The genetic interactions between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and cardiovascular diseases

Nicholas W. S. Chew et al.

Summary: This comprehensive review examines the genetic associations between NAFLD and CVD, and discusses the overlapping and opposing correlations between the two diseases. Unique findings include certain NAFLD susceptibility genes that have cardioprotective properties. The complex interactions between genetic and environmental risk factors reveal the differences in genetic influence on NAFLD and its associated CVD.

Prognostically Distinct Phenotypes of Metabolic Health Beyond Obesity in Aortic Stenosis

Nicholas W. S. Chew et al.

Summary: The study examines the prognosis of patients with significant aortic stenosis (AS) based on the presence of metabolic health and obesity. The results show that metabolically healthy obese patients and metabolically unhealthy obese patients are associated with lower all-cause mortality rates. In contrast, metabolically healthy nonobese patients exhibit the worst survival.

Summary: This study found that longer duration of diabetes is associated with an increased risk of incident heart failure. The association was stronger among younger individuals, those with poorer glycemic control, higher body mass index, women, and Blacks. The study suggests that delaying diabetes onset may help prevent heart failure, and interventions targeting individuals with long-standing diabetes may improve heart failure outcomes.
