Blood pressure control and complex health conditions in older adults: impact of recent hypertension management guidelines

Daniela Anker et al.

Summary: The ACC/AHA guidelines lowered the definition of hypertension to 130/80mmHg, while the ESC/ESH guidelines kept it at 140/90mmHg. Compared to ESC/ESH thresholds, the prevalence of measured elevated BP was higher and BP control was lower using ACC/AHA thresholds.

Summary: In the SPRINT study, eGFR and albuminuria were strong determinants in forecasting HF risk, while the effect of intensive blood pressure control in decreasing HF risk did not significantly vary across the spectrum of kidney function or albuminuria.

Absolute Cardiovascular Disease Risk Assessed in Old Age Predicts Disability and Mortality: A Retrospective Cohort Study of Community-Dwelling Older Adults

Keitaro Makino et al.

Summary: Limited evidence exists on the predictive validity of absolute cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in predicting disability and mortality in old age. This study of over 7000 community-dwelling individuals aged 65 and older found that higher levels of absolute CVD risk were associated with increased risks of disability and mortality, suggesting that estimated CVD risk levels may serve as surrogate markers for these outcomes even in old age.

Prevention of heart failure events with intensive versus standard blood pressure lowering across the spectrum of kidney function and albuminuria: a SPRINT substudy

Muthiah Vaduganathan et al.

Summary: In the SPRINT study, estimated glomerular filtration rate and albuminuria were strong and additive determinants in forecasting heart failure risk, and the effect of intensive blood pressure control in decreasing heart failure risk did not significantly vary across the spectrum of kidney function or albuminuria.
