Recent Advances in Mechanochromic Luminescence of Organic Crystalline Compounds

Suguru Ito

Summary: Mechanochromic luminescence (MCL) refers to reversible color changes in solid-state emission caused by mechanical stimulus. Recent research has focused on the development of organic crystalline compounds with various MCL behaviors, including self-recovery, emission shifts, color switching, and multi-stimuli-responsive emission. Strategies like creating polymorphic crystals and two-component systems are discussed for controlling and improving MCL properties in organic crystals.

Unusual Alternating Crystallization-Induced Emission Enhancement Behavior in Nonconjugated ω-Phenylalkyl Tropylium Salts

Reece D. Crocker et al.

Summary: The study reports a series of novel omega-phenyl n-alkyl tropylium tetrafluoroborates, which exhibit alternating physicochemical properties, with odd-carbon compounds existing as room temperature ionic liquids and even-carbon compounds as crystalline solids. The compound with the highest photoluminescent quantum yield in this series showed an unusual arrangement of carbocationic dimer in the solid state. XRD analysis and ab initio calculations provided interesting insights into these systems.

Optical nature of non-substituted triphenylmethyl cation: Crystalline state emission, thermochromism, and phosphorescence

Tomohiko Nishiuchi et al.

Summary: This research explores the optical properties of non-substituted trityl cations in the crystalline state, revealing the existence of two crystal polymorphs with different colors, yellow and orange, both exhibiting crystalline-state emission. X-ray crystallographic analysis demonstrates distinct molecular packing arrangements in the two polymorphs, and investigations into their optical properties show a color change in the orange crystal to yellow upon cooling due to a change in charge transfer interactions, with both crystal forms displaying phosphorescence.
