Nanoscale molecular rectifiers

Ritu Gupta et al.

Summary: The use of molecules bridged between two electrodes as stable rectifiers is a significant goal in molecular electronics. Recent advances in custom-designed molecular systems have the potential to make these systems competitive with silicon-based devices, with rectification ratios exceeding 10(5). This article provides an overview and critical analysis of recent progress in molecular rectification, including different types of molecular systems and their rectification mechanisms, as well as prospects for commercialization.

Electronic Mechanism of In Situ Inversion of Rectification Polarity in Supramolecular Engineered Monolayer

Gyu Don Kong et al.

Summary: This study describes polarity inversion in molecular rectification and its mechanism. By using a supramolecular engineered self-assembled monolayer, researchers observed a rectification ratio-voltage relationship over a wide voltage range and discovered polarity inversion. The findings suggest that the wide voltage range allows access to molecular orbital energy levels, resulting in polarity inversion.

Large cooperative effects in tunneling rates across van der Waals coupled binary self-assembled monolayers

Yuan Li et al.

Summary: This paper describes large positive cooperative effects in the tunneling rates across molecular junctions of mixed self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). By gradually diluting one type of molecule in the mixed SAM, it was found that the cooperative effect is only significant in the coherent tunneling regime. Density functional theory (DFT) analysis showed that these cooperative effects are caused by Fc-X van der Waals interactions, with varying strengths depending on the X group. These strong cooperative effects significantly alter the operation of a molecular diode, highlighting the importance of considering cooperative effects, driven by van der Waals interactions, in the rational design of electronic devices working at the tunneling regime.

Modulated Structure and Rectification Properties of a Molecular Junction by a Mixed Self-Assembled Monolayer

Hira Khalid et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the supramolecular structure and rectification performance of a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) based on ferrocene modulated by a mixed SAM with an inert diluent. The results show that the magnitude and stability of the rectification ratio strongly depend on the amount, phase structure, and orientation of the ferrocene in the monolayer, allowing for tunable rectification and increased stability. The performance of the mixed monolayer is improved by post-assembling the ferrocene on the inert diluent.

Reversing Molecular Dilution Effect by Varying the Bottom Electrode

Gyu Don Kong et al.

Summary: This paper describes charge tunneling across mixed self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and investigates the effect of the bottom electrode on molecular dilution and tunneling function in large-area molecular junctions. The study found that the effect of molecular dilution on tunneling can be reversed by varying the bottom electrode.

Solid State Dilution Controls Marcus Inverted Transport in Rectifying Molecular Junctions

Hungu Kang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of solid-state molecular dilution on Marcus inverted charge transport, finding that dilution can alter the environment polarity within a monolayer and subsequently affect electron hopping and the stabilization of charged BIPY species, pushing the equilibrium in the reverse direction. The research demonstrates that solid-state molecular dilution allows systematic control of the environment polarity of active components in nanoscale devices.

Superexchange Coupling-Induced Enhancements of Thermoelectric Performance in Saturated Molecules

Nayoung Cho et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that the thermopower of saturated molecules can be enhanced by superexchange coupling, leading to an improvement in the Seebeck coefficient with increasing length. The enhanced thermoelectric performance is attributed to the superexchange-induced enhanced ability to mediate metal wave function in junctions.

Hopping Conductance in Molecular Wires Exhibits a Large Heavy-Atom Kinetic Isotope Effect

Quyen Van Nguyen et al.

Summary: Researchers report a large kinetic isotope effect (KIE) for intramolecular charge transport in p-conjugated oligophenyleneimine (OPI) molecules connected to Au electrodes. Isotopic labeling in long OPI wires (>4 nm in length) produces a conductance KIE, suggesting a thermally assisted, through-barrier polaron tunneling mechanism. Shorter OPI wires (<4 nm) do not exhibit a conductance KIE, implying a direct tunneling mechanism. Temperature-dependent measurements reveal an activated conductance for N-15-substituted OPI wires. This observation opens up opportunities for understanding microscopic conduction mechanisms in pi-conjugated molecules.

Interstitially Mixed Self-Assembled Monolayers Enhance Electrical Stability of Molecular Junctions

Gyu Don Kong et al.

Summary: Interstitially mixed self-assembled monolayers (imSAMs) remarkably enhance the electrical stability of molecular-scale electronic devices without deteriorating function and reliability. This is achieved through the new approach of repeated surface exchange of molecules (ReSEM), filling the interstices between matrix molecules with reinforcement molecules to significantly enhance breakdown voltage.

Electron-Irradiation Promoted Exchange Reaction as a Tool for Surface Engineering and Chemical Lithography

Andreas Terfort et al.

Summary: This review introduces a novel irradiation-promoted exchange reaction approach for aliphatic SAMs, overcoming the limitations of extensive irradiation-induced damage and allowing for selective modification of specific chemical groups. The key idea is to control the exchange reaction between a primary aliphatic SAM and a potential molecular substituent by electron irradiation, leading to the preparation of a large variety of binary SAMs with controlled compositions for complex chemical patterning with low irradiation doses and flexible choice of SAM-forming molecules.
